This is a story about my brain…
So, I was a very smart kid. By the age of 18 months, I could speak in complete sentences. By third grade, I was scoring post-high school on standardized tests. As all my teachers agreed, I had so much potential, but I was also struggling simultaneously. I didn't have many friends outside of books.ll.
But I was smart, so nobody was worried. It wasn't until middle school when I was responsible for getting to classes on time and remembering to bring my homework that being smart wasn't enough anymore, and my grades started to suffer.
My mom took me to the doctor, and after a comprehensive evaluation, I was diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
By 21, I had dropped out of college and moved back home.
Over the next ten years, I started and quit, or was fired from, 15 jobs.
At this point, I was 32 and had no idea what I was doing with my life besides reading self-help books.
At this point, I could have given up on myself; I could have decided that everyone who thought I had potential was wrong.
But I didn't because I knew that it was my behavior that had gotten me here, and behavior is affected by the brain, and my brain has ADHD.
I started doing some research and found a lot of great information. I also found some bad information, but that's another talk.
So I decided to write a book. I had no idea how to do it, but I did! I turned my neurodiversity into my greatest strength by overcoming all the hidden obstacles.... Now it's your turn!

“A convincing account of science’s flirtation with the marginal and the marvelous” from the author of Conjuring Science (Journal of the History of the Behavioral Sciences).

Séances were wildly popular in France between 1850 and 1930, when members of the general public and scholars alike turned to the wondrous as a means of understanding and explaining the world. Sofie Lachapelle explores how five distinct groups attempted to use and legitimize séances: spiritists, who tried to create a new “science” concerned with the spiritual realm and the afterlife; occultists, who hoped to connect ancient revelations with contemporary science; physicians, psychiatrists, and psychologists, who developed a pathology of supernatural experiences; psychical researchers, who drew on the unexplained experiences of the public to create a new field of research; and metapsychists, who attempted to develop a new science of yet-to-be understood natural forces.

An enlightening and entertaining narrative that includes colorful people like “Allan Kardec”—a pseudonymous former mathematics teacher from Lyon who wrote successful works on the science of the séance and what happened after death—Investigating the Supernatural reveals the rich and vibrant diversity of unorthodox beliefs and practices that existed at the borders of the French scientific culture in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

“What is science? . . . In her engaging book, Sophie Lachapelle probes for an answer by looking at the liminal realm between science and superstition and the attempt to render the supernatural explicable in naturalistic terms.” —Isis

“A welcome addition to the growing literature on spiritism, occultism and physical research in modern France.” —French History

Take a paranormal tour of this Pacific Northwest town . . . photos included!   Historic Snohomish has enough ghostly tales for a town twice its size. A policeman named Henry, who died on the floor of the Oxford Tavern, haunts the popular watering hole alongside nearly twenty other impish spirits. Incarcerated for everything from public drunkenness to coldblooded murder, former inmates still crowd the cells of the old county jail on First Street, banging against the metal confines. Locals attribute the faint lilt of a fiddle heard near the railroad tracks to the spirit of the sad, sullen man who committed suicide on the nearby bluff.   In this spooky guide to Snohomish, Washington, Deborah Cuyle reveals the chilling history, strange stories, and wandering souls that refuse to leave their lovely town.
