Sinopsis

Europe in the twentieth century was a continent of tumult, revolutions, and war. When Israel Is King focuses in on the events that took place in Hungary in the early part of the century, recounting a swirl of underhanded dealings and political murders as the fortunes of different actors and interests rose and fell, and draws particular attention to one pernicious influence and its role in the chaos.

The factions of Count Tisza, the Kaiser, and even the Soviet Union all made Hungary their contesting ground, a convenient proxy for larger struggles. Above all, however, this narrative brings out the pivotal role played by Israel-that is, the Jewish people and their collective interests. These interests are clearly identified in the Hungarian context, and demonstrated in their desire to bring revolutionary change to the country and create a new Jerusalem. The influence of Israel reaches its zenith with the short-lived Hungarian Soviet Republic led by Bela Kun, whose demise would bring an end to Israel's designs, at least for the time being.

Written by French brothers and prolific authors Jerome and Jean Tharaud, this updated 1921 English translation of When Israel Is King is now being made widely available. Antelope Hill Publishing is proud to bring back this foundational work which tells the story of a small but brave land and its struggles, many of which echo ours today.

Although Andrew Jackson gained notoriety as a rakish young man, religion's influence on him ebbed and flowed as he established himself as part of the South's planter elite. With his devout wife, Rachel, he attended church and knew his Bible and religious subjects well, and while his determination to preserve his reputation involved him in numerous personal conflicts—including a duel that led to his killing a rival—he blended the principles of the antebellum South's honor-based culture with his belief in a traditional, orthodox version of Christianity. Likewise, he easily reconciled his religion with his ownership of slaves and his advocacy of Native American removal, and while he equated his enemies with the forces of evil, he always attributed his military and political accomplishments to the blessings of Providence. As he aged, Jackson became more devout, but he never experienced a dramatic conversion—contradicting the expectations of the leading revivalists of his era's Second Great Awakening—and he consistently promoted religious liberty and separation of church and state as core republican principles. Ultimately, Jackson's faith reflected a version of Christianity widespread in his era, and his frequent appeals for divine guidance and for God's blessing on his nation further encouraged the development of an American civil religion.

"Coming of Age in Samoa: A Psychological Study of Primitive Youth for Western Civilization" by Margaret Mead is a pioneering work in cultural anthropology that examines the adolescence and cultural practices of Samoan youth. Originally published in 1928, Mead's study challenges Western assumptions about the universality of adolescent experiences and sheds light on the influence of cultural factors on human behavior.
In this groundbreaking work, Mead explores Samoan society's impact on the emotional and psychological development of its youth, focusing on the transition from adolescence to adulthood. Mead's findings suggest that cultural factors, such as societal norms and expectations, significantly shape individuals' behaviors and attitudes during this crucial life stage.
The book sparked significant debate and discussion, as Mead's conclusions contradicted prevailing notions of the time regarding the fixed and biologically determined nature of human development. Her work influenced the field of anthropology and contributed to a broader understanding of cultural relativism.
"Coming of Age in Samoa" remains a seminal work that invites readers to reconsider their perspectives on cultural diversity and the ways in which societal expectations shape human experiences, particularly during the formative years of adolescence.
