Summary

In 'History of the Eastern Roman Empire', J. B. Bury presents a comprehensive and meticulously researched account of the Byzantine Empire from its inception to its decline. Written in a narrative style that seamlessly intertwines historical analysis with engaging storytelling, Bury employs a broad scholarly approach, emphasizing political, military, and cultural developments while remaining accessible to both specialists and general readers. The work serves as both a continuation and a critical reevaluation of classical scholarship, expanding upon themes introduced in earlier historical texts and situating the Eastern Roman Empire within the larger context of European history and its legacy. J. B. Bury, a distinguished historian and scholar of late antiquity, was deeply influenced by the prevailing academic discourse of his time, which emphasized the evolution of civilizations. His background in classical studies and his commitment to rigorous primary source analysis informed his approach to writing this book. Bury'Äôs aim was not only to document the rich history of the Eastern Roman Empire but also to shed light on its significance in shaping modern Europe and the Mediterranean world. This book is highly recommended for anyone interested in Byzantine history, as it offers invaluable insights into an often-overlooked era. Readers will find Bury's work an essential resource, rich in detail and infused with scholarly rigor, engagingly illuminating the complexities of the Eastern Roman Empire's political, social, and cultural landscape.

Hamilton McWhorter III's service to family and country make him a standout among America's Greatest Generation. A Georgia native whose family roots date from that region's settlement during the 1700s, McWhorter was a naval aviation cadet undergoing training when Pearl Harbor was attacked by Japan on December 7, 1941. After earning his Wings of Gold in early 1942, Ensign McWhorter was trained as a fighter pilot in the robust but technologically outmoded F4F Wildcat. Initially assigned to VF-9, he saw first combat in November 1942 against Vichy French forces in North Africa.

After returning to the United States, VF-9 became the first unit to convert to the new Grumman F6F Hellcat. This was the fighter the U.S. Navy would use to crush Japanese air power during the long offensive from the Southwest Pacific to the shores of Japan. From mid-1943, McWhorter was engaged in the aerial warfare that characterized the battles against Imperial Japan. His fifth aerial victory, in November 1943 off Tarawa Atoll, made him the first ace in the Hellcat, and seven subsequent victories ensured his place in the annals of air-to-air combat.

McWhorter's combat service, from the beginning of the war to the last campaign off the shores of Okinawa, makes his story a must-listen for the serious student of the Pacific air war.

From the New York Times bestselling author of Washington’s Spies, the thrilling story of the Confederate spy who came to Britain to turn the tide of the Civil War—and the Union agent resolved to stop him.

In 1861, soon after the outbreak of the Civil War, two secret agents—one a Confederate, the other his Union rival—were dispatched to neutral Britain, each entrusted with a vital mission.
The South’s James Bulloch, charming and devious, was to acquire a cutting-edge clandestine fleet intended to break President Lincoln’s blockade of Confederate ports, sink Northern merchant vessels, and drown the U.S. Navy’s mightiest ships at sea. The profits from gunrunning and smuggling cotton—Dixie’s notorious “white gold”—would finance the scheme. Opposing him was Thomas Dudley, a resolute Quaker lawyer and abolitionist. He was determined to stop Bulloch by any means necessary in a spy-versus-spy game of move and countermove, gambit and sacrifice, intrigue and betrayal. If Dudley failed, Britain would ally with the South and imperil a Northern victory. The battleground was the Dickensian port of Liverpool, whose dockyards built more ships each year than the rest of the world combined, whose warehouses stored more cotton than anywhere else on earth, and whose merchant princes, said one observer, were “addicted to Southern proclivities, foreign slave trade, and domestic bribery.”
From master of historical espionage Alexander Rose, The Lion and the Fox is the astonishing, untold tale of two implacable foes and their twilight struggle for the highest stakes.
