Sinopse

How do we build cities where we aren't just living within the same urban space, but living together?

Greater Toronto is now home to a larger proportion of foreign-born residents than any other major global metropolis. Not surprisingly, city officials rarely miss an opportunity to tout the region’s ethno-cultural neighbourhoods. Yet there’s strong evidence that the GTA is experiencing widening socio-economic disparities that have produced worrisome divisions. We say that ‘diversity is our strength,’ but has a feel-good catchphrase prevented us from confronting the forces that seem to be separating and isolating urban communities?

Through compelling storytelling and analysis, Subdivided’s contributors – a wide range of place-makers, academics, activists and journalists – ask how we can expand city-building processes to tackle issues ranging from transit equity and trust-based policingto holistic mental health, dignified affordable housing and inclusive municipal governance. Ultimately, Subdivided aims to provoke the tough but pressing conversations required to build a truly connected and just city.

Renowned by law enforcement and clinical mental health experts nationwide, Delete Me: D.S.M. 7 Steps to Social Media Abstinence, was formerly only circulated through DRUGFR33.ORG.
Swipe left. It's time to delete the social media disease. There are currently no specialized treatments for social media addiction and anxiety type conditions attributed to social media usage. Whereas most "remedies" for social media abuse call for "vacations", "breaks", and "parental surveillance" from the applications, Delete Me refutes these methods as ineffective. Fortune 500 IT consultant & engineer turned clinical mental health researcher & crisis intervention counselor, J.A. Thomas insists that we’re far better off abstaining from the applications altogether. J.A. Thomas, MSW, who is one of a growing army of industry experts going offline, offers powerful and personal reasons for all of us to abandon these treacherous online platforms. J.A. Thomas left a lucrative career in Big Tech in pursuit of investigating online crime with law enforcement. Now a critical crisis intervention counselor, Thomas hopes to foster transparent public health information surrounding the dangers of social media usage and its links to severe mental health conditions and the illicit online sex & drug trades. The methodologies introduced in D.S.M. 7 insist in total abstinence from all social media applications as key to driving us towards richer and more meaningful ways of living by connecting us back to the world beyond the tiny blue screen.
"Educational, engaging and life saving! J.A.Thomas sounds the alarm on the coercive and destructive force that is big social. This book will help you change your life for the better and allow you to proudly proclaim ... I'm offline."

No one goes into healthcare with the intention of hurting people, or wanting to come off as callous, cold, or unfeeling. Fortunately, most people working in healthcare understand that kindness and compassion are key, even foundational to success in the care they provide to patients and families. And yet, all too often, there are instances when contact with healthcare is tainted by experiences ranging from vaguely annoying or abrasive to outright emotionally assaultive. Patients may confront experiences that chip away at their sense of pride and personhood.Dignity in Care provides listeners with what they need to know about the humanity and tone of care, and how they can engage in these facets of care in a thoughtful and meaningful way that will satisfy their patients' needs to be seen and appreciated as "whole persons." The author explores how the humanity of care can get overlooked and how to avoid this happening. It teaches how to communicate better with patients, helping them to feel not just cared for, but cared about. Sir William Osler said, "The good physician treats the disease; the great physician treats the patient who has the disease." Dignity in Care applies this outlook to all of healthcare, because many people can gain technical competency, but success within healthcare requires more.

What the Bears Know - How I...

In the late 1990s, the town of Mammoth Lakes, California, hired Steve Searles as a hunter to cull half its troublesome bear population. But as he began to prepare for the grim task, the bears soon won him over, and Searles realized there had to be a better way. He soon developed nonlethal tactics to control their behavior and overpopulation that heralded a landmark moment in the care and handling of the American black bear. But change was not without its challenges. To some, his success was dismissed due to his lack of formal academic training. Yet Searles never wavered in his commitment, and eventually became not just local folk hero but a nationally recognized expert. This high school dropout saved not just the bears, but, in many ways, his community.

In a tradition that runs from John Muir to Bear Grylls, Searles finds a fellowship with nature and a deeper meaning in the world of bears. Do bears understand things we don't? Are they dialed in to some greater natural force? Unlike us, bears waste little time on unreasonable fears. Bears are fully in the moment. They have an inner peace that seems to offset their power and strength. That may explain why no other animal on the planet is as revered as the bear. As Searles shares his remarkable knowledge and we become immersed in the ursine world, you'll never look at bears or nature the same way again.
