Sinopse

An entrepreneur shares anecdotes from his prosperous career while offering readers their own roadmap to success in business. The backbone of businesses, the opener and closer of deals, the risktaker who bets on themself-that’s an entrepreneur. Jay D. Rodgers has seen and done it all: from the gritty start-ups to full-scale, world-wide businesses that generate millions in revenue each year. For more than half a century, Jay has started and sold capital ventures, from custom-made cowboy boots to the world’s largest breath-alcohol interlock company, and he’s helped many others along the way.The Bet is blunt and honest and offers no excuses—an entrepreneur always finds a way. When Jay’s betting, he’s betting big—as an entrepreneur should—on his business, his partners, and his experience to wrangle the best results. His advice and strategies for success are set apart by his trials, errors, and triumphs that come with the territory of serial entrepreneurship. The Bet is like a session with Jay. He’ll share how he did it, and he’ll show you how. You’ll learn: The value of understanding what motivates people An easy, never-fail secret to buying bank notes Why sometimes it’s more profitable to change the players than to change the game An important concept Jay learned at Harvard Business School An argument for why you should put all your eggs in one basket Jay will even explain the bet he made with the publisher of this book—a bet that guarantees everyone wins. If you’re an experienced entrepreneur looking for insider secrets or if you’re just starting out, The Bet will help you turn your business dreams into reality.“Jay did it. Then, he helped, and continues to, help others do it. Now, he’s sharing his wisdom and his strategy in this book that will take you to the next step as an entrepreneur on a track to success.” —Verne Harnish, Founder of Entrepreneurs’ Organization (EO) and Author of Scaling Up (Rockefeller Habits 2.0)“Passing along his wide breadth of experience and talents to the next generation of leaders in The Bet, Jay Rodgers offers priceless, high-level guidance for achieving business success and help entrepreneurs to maximize their impact.” —Gino Wickman, Bestselling Author of Traction: Get a Grip on Your Business and The EOS Life: How to Live Your Ideal Entrepreneurial Life“Wisdom is a must for every entrepreneur. What was it like to serve as an artillery officer during the Second World War? How did he view the battlefield and experience combat? And how did his work with the guns combine with that of the other arms - the infantry, the tanks? Peter Pettit's diary, covering his entire wartime career in the Royal Artillery, edited and with an extensive introduction by John Philip Jones, offers a rare insight into the day-to-day existence of a gunner at war, and it is a valuable record of the role played by the Royal Artillery during the conflict. Since Peter Pettit served as a field officer in North Africa, Sicily, Normandy and during the Allied advance across France and Belgium into Germany, his account shows the wide range of challenges that confronted the artillery in different conditions at each stage of the war. Although the landscapes and battlefields changed, the practical problems and acute dangers he faced remained much the same, and he recorded them in the same open and forthright way. His authentic record, combined with John Philip Jones's meticulous description of the planning and progress of each campaign, provide a rounded view the nature of the artillery war and the men who fought it.General Sir Richard Barrons, Commander, Joint Forces Command: 'Professor John Philip Jones breaks new ground as he brings into the light for the first time the private record of one rather special participant. Peter Pettit's personal and contemporaneous notes detail his journey from the first encounters with a determined enemy in Tunisia, through the difficult invasion of Sicily, and finally on to the outstanding events of Normandy in 1944 . . .. . . This story is made much more interesting and accessible for the general reader by the accompanying succinct historical overview of the events. . .. . . For anyone looking for a rare insight into the hard business of field soldiering in the crucible of war, these diaries paint a very colourful, accurate and illuminating picture.'

    Resolute Rebel - General Roswell...

The first biography of the general’s complex, often contradictory military service in the US and Confederate armies and his postwar British exploits.

Roswell S. Ripley (1823–1887) was a man of considerable contradictions exemplified by his distinguished antebellum service in the US Army, followed by a controversial career as a Confederate general. After the war he was active as an engineer/entrepreneur in Great Britain. Author Chet Bennett contends that these contradictions drew negative appraisals of Ripley from historiographers, and in Resolute Rebel Bennett strives to paint a more balanced picture of the man and his career.

Born in Ohio, Ripley graduated from the US Military Academy and served with his classmate Ulysses S. Grant in the Mexican War, during which Ripley was cited for gallantry in combat. In 1849 he published The History of the Mexican War, the first book-length history of the conflict. While stationed at Fort Moultrie in Charleston, Ripley met his Charleston-born wife and began his conversion from unionism to secessionism. After resigning his US Army commission in 1853, Ripley became a sales agent for firearms manufacturers. When South Carolina seceded from the Union, Ripley took a commission in the South Carolina Militia and was later commissioned a brigadier general in the Confederate army. Wounded at the Battle of Antietam in 1862, he carried a bullet in his neck until his death. Unreconciled in defeat, Ripley moved to London, where he unsuccessfully attempted to gain control of arms-manufacturing machinery made for the Confederacy, invented and secured British patents for cannons and artillery shells, and worked as a writer who served the Lost Cause.

After twenty-five years researching Ripley in the United States and Great Britain, Bennett asserts that there are possibly two reasons a biography of Ripley has not previously been written. First, it was difficult to research the twenty years he spent in England after the war. Second, Ripley was so denigrated by South Carolina’s governor Francis Pickens and Gen. P. G. T. Beauregard that many writers may have assumed it was not worth the effort and expense. Bennett documents a great disconnect between those negative appraisals and the consummate, sincere military honors bestowed on Ripley by his subordinate officers and the people of Charleston after his death, even though he had been absent for more than twenty years.

“A vitally useful addition to the Civil War Charleston literature.” —Civil War Books and Authors

“[A] deeply researched and closely argued study. General Roswell S. Ripley emerges from the margins of Civil War history thanks to the able pen of Chet Bennett.” —A. Wilson Greene, author of Civil War Petersburg: Confederate City in the Crucible of War

The North Koreans attack on their Southern neighbors shocked and surprised the World. The conflict rapidly escalated with China soon heavily involved on one side and the United States and United Nations on the other. The author, then a young Gunner officer, found himself in the midst of this very nasty war. He describes first hand what it was like to be at the infamous Battle of the Hook, where UN troops held off massed attacks by the Communists. Few outside the war zone realized just how horrific conditions were.As a qualified Chinese interpreter and, later, a senior military intelligence officer, Parritt is well placed to analyze why the Commonwealth got involved, the mistakes and successes and the extreme risk that the war represented. This is not only a fine memoir but a unique insight into a forgotten War.

As well as offering an engaging and insightful account of a forty-year career spent in the upper echelons of the diplomatic and political worlds (and which included four years in pre-revolutionary Iran in addition to his fourteen years in Turkey, France and the USA), They Call It Diplomacy sets out to explain what diplomats actually do; mounts a vigorous defence of the continuing relevance of the diplomat in an age of instant communication, social media and special envoys; and details what Westmacott sees as some of the successes of recent British diplomacy.A committed Internationalist, Westmacott offers trenchantly Europhile views on the Brexit referendum and its aftermath, and voices his concerns about Britain's ability to continue to bring its influence to bear on the wider world now that it has left the European Union.2021 Head of Zeus
