Summary

This memoir by the legendary publicist offers “an intimate glimpse into the best and the worst of the golden age of Hollywood” (Stacy Keach, Golden Globe Award–nominated actor).   Jay Bernstein, an entertainment industry fixture who helped launch the careers of celebrities including Farrah Fawcett and Suzanne Somers, was famed for his sense of showmanship, his outrageous style, and the publicity stunts he engineered to get attention for his clients. Starmaker tells his story, from his childhood in Oklahoma City and his first job in a Hollywood mailroom to the ownership of his own public relations firm and his work as a television producer.   In addition to a behind-the-scenes look at several generations of show business and hard-hitting insights about how the industry changed over the decades, Bernstein also describes the relationships he had with stars and his notorious techniques, such as paying women to throw hotel keys at Tom Jones, having Entertainment Tonight host Mary Hart’s legs insured for one million dollars, and getting married underwater for an episode of Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous. With the wisdom of experience and a sense of humor, this autobiography shares the intimate details of a fascinating Hollywood life.

The Brementown Musicians CD presents a story of four aging domestic animals who, after a lifetime of hard work, are about to be disposed of by their masters. In this slightly varied adaptation of the classic Grimm Brothers folktale, the animals, embarking on the road but not knowing where to go or what to do, are greeted by a guiding spirit who encourages them not to feel downtrodden or worthless but to recognize their inherent worth and talents by connecting to the music that resides inside them. All the animals have a characteristic musical piece that is unique to them which resonates their true nature. As the story unfolds, children hear classical music drawn from three centuries of piano literature, with each piece varied in style, tempo, and temperament. The selections, chosen with children in mind, are short pieces taken from famous composers such as Mozart, Tchaikovsky, and Prokofieff. The interplay (though never overlap) of storytelling and music listening encourages children’s imagination while fostering an appreciation for the arts.

“I am a punk and a Buddhist,And I'm not conflicted at all.“ Wisdom of the Punk Buddha is the perfect amalgamation of thoughtful poetry and the accumulated wisdom of a lifetime of Buddhist philosophy and knowledge and devotion to the punk scene. Built around a series of easy to digest life lessons. It’s a book that poses a simple question - “Do you want to be better person? Do you want to be better tomorrow than you were today?” If the answer is yes, then your journey to punk rock and personal enlightenment begins here... Tim Cundle, Mass Movement A mixture of very enjoyable punk poetry and Buddhist thought... designed to help you make sense of the world and your place in it. This book shows that a lot of punk rock thoughts and ideas can be found in Buddhism, if you look at it the way Sam Marsh does. Tony Whatley, Suspect Device Wisdom of the Punk Buddha teaches us about true punk rock ethos, principles of Buddhism, love, peace, unity, wisdom, and many other topics through a comprehensive collection of thoughtfully written poems. The author shares his thoughts, observations, and criticism but also takes time to explain some background too. Wisdom of the Punk Buddha is a must read for every bookworm punkrocker. Djordje Miladinovic, Thoughts Words Action Punks are really nice, but many people are scared of them. Punks definitely have an attitude, and this can be deemed intimidating if you don’t know how to read it. Even though punks are lovely, they are not afraid to vent their anger at the state of the world, and protest against all the terrible things that some people do. This is why punk music sounds so aggressive - it’s getting all that anger out.At the core of punk attitude is love - yearning for a better world where people can live in harmony and peace, free from suffering. It’s the same attitude that Buddhists have, and that’s why I’m a Punk Buddhist, and I’m not conflicted at all.

An exploration of the history and significance of the Palace of Culture and Science in Warsaw, Poland.

The Palace of Culture and Science is a massive Stalinist skyscraper that was “gifted” to Warsaw by the Soviet Union in 1955. Framing the Palace’s visual, symbolic, and functional prominence in the everyday life of the Polish capital as a sort of obsession, locals joke that their city suffers from a “Palace of Culture complex.” Despite attempts to privatize it, the Palace remains municipally owned, and continues to play host to a variety of public institutions and services. The Parade Square, which surrounds the building, has resisted attempts to convert it into a money-making commercial center. Author Michal Murawski traces the skyscraper’s powerful impact on twenty-first century Warsaw; on its architectural and urban landscape; on its political, ideological, and cultural lives; and on the bodies and minds of its inhabitants. The Palace Complex explores the many factors that allow Warsaw’s Palace to endure as a still-socialist building in a post-socialist city.

“The most brilliant book on a building in many years, making a case for Warsaw’s once-loathed Palace of Culture and Science as the most enduring and successful legacy of Polish state socialism.” —Owen Hatherley, The New Statesman’s“Books of the Year” list (UK)

“An ambitious anthropological biography of Poland’s tallest and most infamous building, the Palace of Culture and Science in Warsaw. . . . It is a truly fascinating story that challenges a tenacious stereotype, and Murawski tells it brilliantly, judiciously layering literatures from multiple disciplines, his own ethnographic work, and personal anecdotes.” —Patryk Babiracki, H-Net History
