Sinossi

She thought she knew everyone's heart—except her own.

In Emma, Jane Austen presents a sparkling tale of wit, charm, and romantic missteps set in the genteel English countryside. At the center is Emma Woodhouse, a clever and headstrong young woman who delights in matchmaking—but not marriage.

As Emma meddles in the lives of her friends and neighbors, she soon finds that her social schemes come with unexpected consequences. Through humor and heart, Austen examines themes of self-awareness, love, and the limits of control in a tightly drawn social world.

    Elective Affinities

Goethe as a novelist is best known for two earlier novels, The Sorrows of Young Werther (1774) and Wilhelm Meister’s Apprenticeship (1796). But Elective Affinities, which was published in 1809, is widely regarded as his mature masterpiece, not least because of its unusual provenance, which brings together Goethe the scientist as well as Goethe the writer. Baron Eduard and his second wife Charlotte enjoy a quiet, humdrum existence in their opulent castle, but when he invites his friend the Captain and she invites her niece Ottilie to stay with them, their lives are turned inside out as both hosts begin to feel attracted to their guests. Using one of the chemistry theories of the time (the term ‘elective affinities’ was used by Robert Boyle and Isaac Newton) as a metaphor throughout the novel, Goethe juxtaposes social interactions with scientific principles, while illustrating the typically Romantic concern of the individual coming to terms with society. Controversial when first published and still much critically debated today, Goethe s Elective Affinities is an early model for the modern novel.

“Oh what a tangled web we weave. When first we practice to deceive.” –Marmion, Sir Walter Scott
It is San Francisco in the summer of 1882, and Annie and Nate Dawson have finally found a good balance between the demands of family and work. Nate has an interesting legal case defending a young woman who has been left out of her mother’s will. Annie is looking into whether the financial difficulties facing the Potrero Woolen Mills are caused by bad management or bad luck. For her own reasons, Biddy O’Malley is eager to help Annie with her investigation. What none of the three of them could anticipate was how secrets and unexpected entanglements would complicate their search for the truth.
Entangled Threads is the eighth full-length novel in the USA Today best-selling author’s Victorian San Francisco Mystery series. However, it can be read as a stand-alone by anyone who enjoys cozy historical mysteries with an amateur female sleuth.
