Sinopse

Philo lived in Alexandria between the end of the first century BC and the middle of the first century AD. He left many writings. He is famous for his teachings on the logos, so close to the New Testament doctrine of John and Paul, to inevitably give rise to questions about the nature of such similarities.
I read “Philo and the New Testament” by John Watson many years ago and found it very interesting, precious to introduce to Philo’s thought.
Contributions like Philo’s to human knowledge cannot be lost. So, it is indeed a privilege to present this writing to today’s students.
I am sure the reader will find valuable the addition to this text of the treatise On the Creation presented in English and in the Greek in order for the student to be able to enjoy Philo’s writing and have access to the original terminology which is so important to investigate in certain passages.

The Bible is not some dusty textbook, but a veritable circus of humanity, with high-soaring saints, back-talking donkeys, left-handed kingslayers, and all the glory and gore you can fit inside the big top of this biblical tent.

And everywhere in this story is God who, in his wild and passionate love for humanity, is shepherding history toward the birth and ministry of Jesus the Messiah.

Do you already have a good grasp of the Old Testament? Wonderful. This book will be an enjoyable review. Do you not know the difference between the Bible and The Hobbit? Also fine. This book will be a helpful map into unknown territory.

By the time we're done, you won't know all the ins and outs of the story, but you will have a strong grasp of the major movers and shakers. We will sit shotgun with patriarchs and prophets. Each one will take us a little farther down the Old Testament road until we get to the goal: to Jesus, the one in whom the whole story finds fulfillment and meaning.

"There is one thing, and only one thing, in which it is granted to you to be free in life… that is to recognise and profess the truth."

The culmination of a lifetime of philosophical thought and consideration, The Kingdom of God is Within You (1893) is a powerful treatise on faith, morality and the futility of violence. It was banned in the author's native Russia because of its advocacy of pacifism, its questioning of the established socio-political order and its criticism of the Russian Orthodox Church.

Tolstoy redefines Christianity as a personal, moral revolution rather than a mystical or institutional faith and advocates for a life of moral integrity and personal connection to God, envisioning a society transformed not by force, but by individuals acting according to their consciences. His radical rejection of organised religion and state violence has inspired generations of reformers, from Mahatma Gandhi to Martin Luther King Jr.
Leo Tolstoy (1828–1910) was a Russian novelist, philosopher, and social reformer, widely regarded as one of the greatest writers of all time. He is best known for his epic novels War and Peace and Anna Karenina, both celebrated for their intricate character development and profound exploration of moral dilemmas and human nature. In his later years, Tolstoy experienced a spiritual awakening which led him to reject materialism and embrace a life of simplicity, seeking to align his life with his beliefs about non-violence and compassion. Tolstoy's legacy endures not only through his literary masterpieces but also through his profound impact on literature and philosophy.

As the world entered the long night of 2020, Philip Yancey turned to John Donne's Devotions, a nearly 400-year-old manuscript, for guidance. In it, he found a trustworthy companion for living through a global pandemic--or any other crisis. As Yancey says, "Nothing had prepared me for Donne's raw account of confrontations with God." By faithfully and poetically rendering Donne's 17th century prose into 21st century vernacular, Yancey opens up this classic work to a new generation of readers. He presents these Job-like meditations on sickness and suffering, alongside his own reflections, in a series of 30 readings that examine the frailty of the human heart, the goodness and sovereignty of God, and the eternal hope of the Resurrection.
