Sinopsis

As we live out our full lives, we will be around for about 70 to 80 years or more. What do we do for our kids, great-grandkids, great-great-grandkids, and others to perceive as important in their lives? Does it revolve around relationships? Most empathetically, yes! How do we treat others or want to be treated by others? This is how one person processed the events in their life to find meaning and relevance to come out stronger.

Berkeley, 1972: a hotbed of creativity where painters, filmmakers, musicians, and writers inspire a young poet.

Second-wave feminism, inspired by Gloria Steinem, Bella Abzug, and Betty Friedan is swelling into a tsunami. Women are joining together to change power dynamics in politics, the home, and the workplace.

On election day, Joan Gelfand casts her vote for George McGovern and boards a plane from New York to California. With one introduction to a woman musician, Joan’s journey to become a writer is born. Embraced by a thriving women’s community of artists, filmmakers, musicians, poets, and writers, Joan is encouraged to find her voice.

Mentored by paradigm-changing writers, Joan finds the courage to face her darkest fears through poetry and art, mining the trauma she experienced after losing her father and questioning her Jewish identity. Reminiscent of Paris in the twenties, Greenwich Village in the sixties, and Berlin in the eighties, Berkeley in the seventies was the “it” city of America.

Outside Voices reports the ups and downs of finding one’s way as an artist, living with a women’s band, forging an independent Jewish identity, founding a women’s restaurant, and becoming a published writer and songwriter while exploring the limits of sexuality and spirituality. The story includes road trips to music festivals in the woods, beaches in Mexico, concerts in Southern California, and a retreat in the Pacific Northwest.

A triumphant story of determination and will, Outside Voices is a backstage look at the women’s movement that sets the stage for decades of change. This book is a firsthand look at how the power of community emboldened innovation, social change, and self-discovery.

“Joan Gelfand has written a compelling book about coming of age in Berkeley in the second wave of feminism circa 1970s. Her depth of discovering herself and her world is intense and reveals all the passion and confusion of a sensitive soul grasping at life through politics, sex, and the long road to becoming a writer.”—Geri Spieler, author of Housewife Assassin: The Woman Who Tried to Kill Gerald Ford

The dark story behind the bright lights of Tinseltown

From the outside, Hollywood starlet Lana Turner seemed to have it all—a thriving film career, a beautiful daughter, and the kind of fame and fortune that most people could only dream of. But when the famous femme fatale began dating mobster Johnny Stompanato, thug for the infamous West Coast mob boss Mickey Cohen, her personal life became violent and unpredictable. Lana’s teenage daughter, Cheryl, watched her beloved mother’s life deteriorate as Stompanato’s intense jealousy took over. Eventually, the physical and emotional abuse became too much to bear, and Lana attempted to break it off with Johnny—with disastrous consequences. The details of what happened that fateful night remain foggy, but it ended in a series of frantic phone calls and Stompanato dead on Lana’s bedroom floor, with Cheryl claiming to have plunged a knife into his abdomen in an attempt to protect her mother. The subsequent investigation made for the biggest headlines of the year, its drama eclipsing every Hollywood movie.

New York Times bestselling author Casey Sherman pulls back Tinseltown’s velvet curtain to reveal the dark underbelly of celebrity, rife with toxic masculinity and casual violence against women, and tells the story of Lana Turner and her daughter, who finally stood up to the abuse that plagued their family for years. A Murder in Hollywood transports us back to the golden age of film and illuminates one of the twentieth century’s most notorious true crime tales.

“A must-read for fans of true crime and Hollywood history, A Murder in Hollywood never disappoints! Casey Sherman deftly serves just the right mix of glamour, glitz, and grit to keep the reader turning pages. It’s a stunner from start to finish.”—Kristin Dilley, cohost of the Mind over Murder podcast

Life is about reflection and forgiveness. It has taken me a lifetime to figure that out. Sometimes we get too involved in our own daily trauma to realize what is happening around us and, subsequently, to us. Whenever I see an elderly person, I like to wonder what stories that person could tell me if given an opportunity. Or, better yet, what did that person learn about him or herself throughout a lifetime of adventures? I use the word "adventures" because life should be viewed as such. Nobody knows how long we'll be here. Nobody knows what will happen next or who we'll meet or who will influence us in the future. But we all can look back at our lives and either laugh or cry or, in my case, cringe at times. I chose to do them all, and I wouldn't change my life for anything in the world. I'm glad I went through some tough times because everything that happened to me had its purpose and lessons to be learned, and unfortunately, it took a lifetime to figure that out. My hopes are that whoever reads this won't need a lifetime like I did.

My family immigrated from Italy to the United States when I was very young, and I wanted nothing more than to blend in with the American culture, but my old-school parents had other thoughts. I left home as a teenager to find myself and discovered a world full of wonderful opportunities; however, I also encountered a series of misfortunes that were both hilarious and unfortunate.

Yes, I am embarrassed about some of the things I wrote about in my new work entitled My Life Without a Nutshell, but I really don't care. The only way to truly heal from past trauma is to be brutally honest with oneself, and that is the intention of this series of short stories. I apologize in advance.

This audiobook is narrated by an AI Voice. When 13-year-old Nicholas Barclay vanished from San Antonio, Texas in 1994, his family was left devastated and clinging to hope. Three years later, their prayers seemed answered when authorities in Spain contacted them about finding Nicholas—alive but traumatized after years of alleged kidnapping and abuse.
But the young man who returned to America wasn't Nicholas Barclay. He was Frédéric Bourdin, a 23-year-old French serial impostor with brown eyes instead of blue, dark hair instead of blonde, and a foreign accent that betrayed his true identity. Yet somehow, he convinced not only the desperate family but also FBI agents, embassy officials, and an entire community that he was their lost boy.
This extraordinary true story delves deep into the psychology of deception and self-deception, exploring how a master manipulator exploited a family's grief and society's vulnerabilities. From Bourdin's meticulous preparation in a Spanish orphanage to his shocking media appearances and eventual exposure, this narrative reveals the disturbing ease with which truth can be twisted when desperate people want to believe.
More than just a crime story, this is a haunting exploration of identity, belonging, and the human capacity for both manipulation and denial. It raises profound questions about family bonds, institutional failures, and the ultimate fate of the real Nicholas Barclay—questions that remain unanswered to this day.
A masterfully crafted psychological thriller that reads like fiction but delivers the cold, unsettling reality of one of the most audacious impersonations in criminal history.

In many ways, John Fitzgerald Kennedy and his young family were the perfect embodiment of the ‘60s. The decade began with a sense of idealism, personified by the attractive Kennedy, his beautiful and fashionable wife Jackie, and his young children. Months into his presidency, Kennedy exhorted the country to reach for the stars, calling upon the nation to send a man to the Moon and back by the end of the decade. In 1961, Kennedy made it seem like anything was possible, and Americans were eager to believe him. The Kennedy years were fondly and famously labeled “Camelot,” by Jackie herself, suggesting an almost mythical quality about the young President and his family. As it turned out, the ‘60s closely reflected the glossy, idealistic portrayal of John F. Kennedy, as well as the uglier truths.
Americans were fascinated by the young First Lady’s style, and the manner in which she glamorously positioned both the First Family and the White House in those years, and Jackie remains one of the country’s most popular First Ladies. But it was in the face of adversity that she truly made her lasting mark, with the country taking its cue from her in the aftermath of the president’s assassination. Having devised and lit the eternal flame at JFK’s tombstone, Jackie also set about securing her husband’s legacy, a time still fondly and mythically remembered as Camelot today, despite his legendary transgressions and infidelities.
Eventually, with the deaths of his brothers, Bobby rose to become the leader of the Kennedy family, at the same time his political prominence rose. Today, unfortunately, Bobby is best remembered for his assassination, the way in which it helped perpetuate the “Kennedy Curse”, and the fact that his political promise, including potentially becoming president in 1968, was never fulfilled.
