In Los Angeles's most underserved communities, Lori Weise is known as the Dog Lady, the woman who's spent decades caring for people in poverty and the animals that love them. Long before anyone else, Weise grasped that animal and human suffering are inextricably connected and created a new rescue narrative, an enduring safety net empowering pet owners and providing resources to reduce the number of pets coming into shelters.

Rethinking Rescue: Dog Lady and the Story of America's Forgotten People and Pets unites the causes of animal welfare and social justice, moving between Weise's story and that of the US rescue movement: from the dog's twentieth-century transition from property to family to the rise of the no kill campaign to stop shelter euthanasia and the contradictions that hampered those efforts. Through captivating storytelling and investigative reporting, Carol Mithers examines the consequences of bias within this overwhelmingly white movement, where an overemphasis on placing animals in affluent homes often disregards pet owners in poverty. Weise's innovative and ultimately triumphant efforts revealed a better way.

Rethinking Rescue boldly confronts two of the biggest challenges of our time—poverty and homelessness—in asking the very humane question, Who deserves the love of a pet?

    Uses for Obsession - A Chef's...

An intimate, searing and hopeful memoir meets manifesto that reframes the way we think about restaurants, cooking, hospitality, leadership and humanity from one of the most respected chefs in the world.

Chef and restaurateur Ben Shewry knows obsession well. Whether it's crispy-edged lasagne, saltwater crocodile ribs or the perfect potato, obsession is what motivates him and what makes him tick. It's also what has propelled his Melbourne restaurant Attica into the league of the most innovative, acclaimed dining experiences in the world, and one of the most vital in Australian history.

In this absorbing and wide-ranging memoir meets manifesto, Shewry applies his sometimes searing, sometimes comic eye to creative freedom in the kitchen, food journalism, sexism in hospitality, the fraud of the farm-to-table sustainability ethos, the cult of the chef, cooking as muse and the legendary Family Bolognese.

Raised on a farm in a close-knit rural New Zealand family, he shares how a childhood surrounded by nature and a reverence for First People's cultures has influenced his work, the values he lives by, and the meticulous, inventive multi-course menu that is synonymous with Attica. Uses for Obsession also tells the intimate, desperate story of how Attica survived 262 days with an empty dining room. How, during a time of epic hospitality transformation, it morphed into a takeaway food business, a merch shop and a summer camp. He was told it couldn't be done and that doubt both tortured and drove him.

At its heart, this is a positive story, an antidote to the macho chef culture that thrives on old ideas about leadership and success. Shewry prosecutes the compelling case for a new way forward. A bold blueprint for the restaurant - and workplace - of the future. One built on kindness, community, truth and a commitment to never giving up.

The Gods of the Nile - Exploring...

Ancient Egypt was a civilization deeply rooted in religion, where gods and goddesses played an essential role in shaping daily life, governance, and the afterlife. The Egyptian pantheon was vast, with deities representing natural forces, human emotions, and cosmic order. These gods were not distant or abstract figures but were actively involved in the lives of the people, influencing everything from the flooding of the Nile to the fate of the soul after death. The Egyptians believed that by honoring their gods through rituals, prayers, and temple offerings, they could maintain harmony in the universe.
One of the defining aspects of Egyptian religion was its polytheistic nature. Unlike monotheistic faiths, which center around a single divine being, the Egyptians worshipped hundreds of gods, each with unique attributes, symbols, and responsibilities. Some, like Ra, the sun god, were powerful and widely revered, while others, such as Taweret, the hippo goddess of childbirth, had more specialized roles. Many deities evolved over time, merging with others or taking on new characteristics as different cities and dynasties rose to prominence. This fluidity allowed Egyptian religion to remain relevant for over three thousand years.
The gods were not only worshipped in grand temples but were also deeply integrated into the personal lives of the people. Pharaohs were believed to be divine or semi-divine figures, ruling as representatives of the gods on Earth. Priests conducted elaborate ceremonies in temple complexes dedicated to major deities, ensuring their favor and protection over the land. Ordinary Egyptians also kept small shrines in their homes, prayed to household gods for blessings, and wore protective amulets bearing sacred symbols. Magic and mythology were intertwined with religious practice, with spells and sacred texts often invoking the names of gods for healing, guidance, and protection.

From Lowney Handy's scandalous small-town open marriage to author James Jones's extraordinary apprenticeship with Maxwell Perkins (legendary editor of Hemingway and Fitzgerald), Star-Crossed Lovers illuminates an unforgettable love story. She was an eccentric small-town self-taught rebel, driven by creative zeal and a non-conformist streak. He was a distressed ex-GI (flat broke, without prospects, damaged by war), 17 years younger than she, consumed by visions of a writer's life. Lowney and her husband invited Jones to live and write at their home in Robinson, Illinois. Many years of struggle ensued. In the end, Jones's From Here to Eternity won the National Book Award and profoundly transformed American literature. The 1953 film adaptation swept the Academy Awards in 1954. Expanding their shared vision of life, the Handys and Jones incorporated a unique writers' colony in 1951 that was funded mostly by Jones's Eternity royalties. This is their odyssey of love, passion, and conflict, which remains exceptional in literary history.

‘Next year I’m going to be 80 years old. My car will be 20 years old. Together we’ll be 100. We’re going to drive to Cairo.’

‘And what route are you going to take?’

‘I have no idea. I think I’ll keep to the right.’

When 80-year-old Julia Albu calls in to her favourite radio show with a zany, half-baked idea, she has no idea that it will lead her to the adventure of a lifetime.
From helping push a 30-year-old Toyota bakkie up a precipitous mountain pass in Malawi to being ‘adopted’ by the riotous ex-pat South African community in Dar es Salaam and being fed mildly hallucinogenic ‘herbs’ by her Ethiopian driver-guide, nothing deterred 80-year-old Julia Albu from her quest to drive through Africa from the Cape to Cairo.
She and her 20-year-old Toyota Conquest, Tracy – a personality in her own right – travelled through 10 African countries, from South Africa to Egypt (and beyond). Julia was accompanied by a series of companions who added texture to her travels: three of her four grown-up children, her son-in-law, and at least one person who began as a complete stranger and ended up as a friend for life.
Reminiscing about her long and interesting life along the way, and maintaining a bright and upbeat outlook regardless of the circumstances, Julia proves that you’re never too old to tackle that bucket list.
