Sinopsis

From the vibrant musical scene in Britain’s second largest city Birmingham, came a plethora of creative rock groups in the middle of the 1960s. Roy Wood, together with several well-known Birmingham faces, left their respective bands to form The Move and armed with Roy’s distinctive song writing style alongside the band’s unique harmonies, they became regulars on British TV’s flagship show Top of the Pops. Meanwhile, Jeff Lynne was starting to make his mark in fellow Birmingham group The Idle Race. These two brilliant songwriters were also close friends and Wood persuaded Lynne to join the Move and later a new project, The Electric Light Orchestra, before a parting of the ways led to Wood forming Wizzard. Roy Wood On Track looks at all of the music recorded by Roy during his time in The Move, ELO, Wizzard and during his sporadic solo career. An appendix also looks at the music of The Wood-linked Idle Race. Wood’s music touches on many genres including rhythm and blues, psych, pop, progressive rock and glam, but throughout his career he has been a true, and largely unsung, innovator. This book shows why his work is much, much greater than one famous yuletide single.

James R. Turner is a graduate from Sheffield Hallam University in Media Studies and is now a music and media journalist. Over the last 25 years he has contributed to Rock Society Magazine, BBC Online, Albion Online, The Digital Fix, Dutch Progressive Rock Pages, Progarchy, Progradar and We Are Cult. James has also published poetry and short stories in two anthologies, personal reflections in two TV history books and one music book. He also works for Bad Elephant Music. He lives in North Somerset, UK, with his fiancée Charlotte, their West Highland Terrier Dilys, Rhodesian Ridgeback Freja, three cats and too many CDs and records.

Piet Mondrian (1872-1944), who can be assigned to the school of classical modernism, was born in Amersfort, Netherlands. After studying in Amsterdam, he started his artist´s career in the impressionist style as a figure and landscape painter. His works from these years showed the influence of Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890) and of Fauvism, a French school from the beginning of the 20th century. When he traveled to Paris in 1911, he discovered Pablo Picasso´s works (1881-1973) and, with that, Cubism. He thereafter became a pioneer of abstract painting in the Netherlands. From the 1920s on, his paintings show a vertical and horizontal composition that, combined with the oppositions of blue, yellow, red, and noncolored spaces, turned into his trademark. His art was very appreciated in New York, where he spent his last years. Mondrian was not only a painter but also an art theoretician and cofounder of the art school De Stijl.

In the early 20th century, Westerns were one of the most popular genres in Hollywood, and one of the young stars at the forefront was Roy Rogers, who had come from an Ohio farm to transform himself into a cowboy. Regardless of his background, Rogers certainly looked the part of the quintessential cowboy, along with his wife Dale Evans and his horse Trigger. His versatile singing and acting abilities made him successful both on radio and on the screen.
Rogers came of age at a time when the “singing cowboy” was at the apex of his popularity, and that was favorable because he actually got his start in show business as a singer. In the early ‘30s, he bounced around several groups as a country music singer before earning national attention as a member of the Sons of the Pioneers, who were signed to Decca and had a couple of hits. As a result, when he first appeared in movies in 1935, it was usually in bit roles that required singing, but when Gene Autry threatened to quit acting in 1938, Rogers was viewed as a suitable replacement for lead roles. As it turned out, he became the premiere “singing cowboy” in Autry’s stead, and from 1939-1954, he was one of the Top 10 Western stars in Hollywood, and a Top 10 movie star overall during some of those years.
As Rogers evolved into the “King of the Cowboys”, he became a pop culture icon, and he was shrewd enough to capitalize on his image. All sorts of Roy Rogers merchandise hit stores, from action figures to comic strips, and Rogers even banked on the popularity of his horse Trigger by featuring him enough to make the horse a household name as well. Even today, people can find the name Roy Rogers all over the place, if only because he eventually had his name lent to a popular fast food chain in later years.
