Sinopsis

In 1875, the Great Sioux War of 1876–77, the last serious Sioux war erupted, when the Dakota gold rush penetrated the Black Hills. The U.S. Government decided to stop evicting trespassers from the Black Hills, and offered to buy the land from the Sioux. When they refused, the Government decided instead to take the land, and gave the Lakota until January 31, 1876 to return to reservations. They were led in the field by Crazy Horse and inspired by Sitting Bull's earlier vision of victory. Sitting Bull was a Hunkpapa Lakota leader who led his people during years of resistance to United States government policies. He was killed by Indian agency police on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation during an attempt to arrest him, at a time when authorities feared that he would join the Ghost Dance movement. Augusto José Ramón Pinochet Ugarte was a Chilean military officer and politician who dominated Chilean politics as a military dictator from 1973 to 1990. His rise to power marked a pivotal and controversial chapter in the nation’s history. Initially serving as the leader of the Military Junta of Chile from 1973 to 1981, he was declared President of the Republic by the junta in 1974, consolidating his role as Chile's de facto head of state. With the approval of a new constitution in 1981, his presidency was formalized, making him the de jure leader of the country until 1990.
Pinochet’s military career set the stage for his rise to power. After steadily climbing the ranks of the Chilean Army, he achieved the position of General Chief of Staff in 1972. In an unexpected turn, President Salvador Allende, leader of the democratically elected left-wing Unidad Popular government, appointed Pinochet as Commander-in-Chief of the Chilean Army on August 23, 1973, just weeks before his eventual ouster. This appointment would prove consequential as Pinochet played a central role in the coup that toppled Allende's government on September 11, 1973. Supported by the United States, the coup ended civilian rule in Chile and marked the beginning of Pinochet’s authoritarian regime.

The US media has been tainted with Russian disinformation, but the more significant threat is how the Right has embraced the Russian model of the news media as a vehicle for propaganda. This could not have happened without Donald Trump, who has been aided and abetted by politicians and news outlets that favor persuasion over information. From his inauguration onwards, Trump has shown allegiance to the Kremlin propaganda playbook—he consistently denies reality, amplifies lies, vilifies the free media, and broadcasts disinformation.

Seeing Red breaks new ground in investigating the scope of Russian disinformation, arguing that key politicians and media outlets in the United States have facilitated the dissemination of Russian propaganda. From the 2020 elections to the Capitol Insurrection to the war in Ukraine, Sarah Oates and Gordon Neil Ramsay examine the penetration of key Kremlin strategic narratives that attempt to project Russian power, blame NATO for Russian aggression, and attack democracy via the US news. Despite knowledge of the risk and resourceful work on tracking down Russian propaganda in the United States, the problem of foreign disinformation continues to this day. As Oates and Ramsay argue, this is in part due to exploitation of the American tradition of free speech and the open nature of the US media system.

Scars on the Land is the first comprehensive history of American slavery to examine how the environment fundamentally formed enslaved people's lives and how slavery remade the Southern landscape. Over two centuries, from the establishment of slavery in the Chesapeake to the Civil War, one simple calculation had profound consequences: rather than measuring productivity based on outputs per acre, Southern planters sought to maximize how much labor they could extract from their enslaved workforce. They saw the landscape as disposable, relocating to more fertile prospects once they had leached the soils and cut down the forests. On the leading edge of the frontier, slavery laid waste to fragile ecosystems, draining swamps, clearing forests to plant crops and fuel steamships, and introducing devastating invasive species. On its trailing edge, slavery left eroded hillsides, rivers clogged with sterile soil, and the extinction of native species. While environmental destruction fueled slavery's expansion, no environment could long survive intensive slave labor. The scars manifested themselves in different ways, but the land too fell victim to the slave owner's lash.
