Sinopsis

In "Men Against the Sea," James Norman Hall crafts a gripping narrative that intertwines themes of survival, camaraderie, and the profound challenges of the human spirit against the vastness of the ocean. This book, a companion to Hall's earlier work, "Mutiny on the Bounty," employs a compelling literary style that oscillates between vivid realism and lyrical prose, delving into the psychological and physical trials faced by castaways stranded in the South Pacific. Set against the backdrop of World War II, Hall expertly captures not just the immediate dangers of the sea but also the deeper emotional currents that propel the characters toward resilience and hope. James Norman Hall, an American writer and aviator, is best known for his collaborations with Charles Nordhoff, which include the acclaimed Bounty trilogy. Drawing from his own extensive maritime experiences and the tumultuous historical context of his time, Hall's writing reflects a profound fascination with the complexities of human nature when confronted with adversities, making "Men Against the Sea" a poignant exploration of endurance. This book is highly recommended for readers interested in nautical fiction, survival narratives, and historical accounts that reflect the human condition. Hall's evocative storytelling and keen insights offer not only an engaging adventure but also a profound meditation on what it means to confront the forces of nature and the very essence of survival.

This collection of essays from rhetoric authority and celebrated writing blogger David Murray applies his signature blend of humor and heart to a free-wheeling conversation about how we communicate in America.
An insightful book packed with wonderful writing, practical advice, and hope for a better, kinder future. —Jonathan Eig, author of King: A Life
You're ready to give up. Throw up your hands and walk out the door. You don't know what else to say—to some dear family and close friends, let alone the crazy strangers that seem to populate half the country. You're ready to read An Effort to Understand.
But don't worry. This is not a book about civility.
Instead, David Murray (blogger, speechwriter, rhetoric authority, and professional curmudgeon) is urging readers to join him in a near-spiritual movement, one that pushes us to consider communication as more than a means of persuading others to our way of thinking, but as a way of thinking all its own.
With his signature blend of wit, warmth, and four-letter words, Murray's essays tackle subjects from the specter of cancel culture and the responsibilities of citizenship to the art of dealing with annoying neighbors and the challenges of talking to kids about injustice. His words show that the personal and political gulfs between us are small compared to our common desire to connect.
It may be a last-ditch effort, but Americans have a chance at trust, peace, and solidarity if we make an effort to speak more honestly and listen to understand.
Because when it comes to communication, we're all the bad guys. Thankfully, we have a chance to be the good guys too.

Those who expect to reap the blessings of freedom, must undergo the fatigues of supporting it." - Thomas Paine
We are witnessing a systematic teardown of democracy worldwide. This book will help you make sense of the world, understand how this could happen, and consider what we can do as ordinary citizens to flip the script on authoritarians.
We are in a perpetual struggle between authoritarian rule and the enduring resilience of freedom, also known as Democracy. This resilience, this unwavering strength, is not just a concept but a beacon of hope that inspires us to fight for our freedom of choice.
Having peace of mind, understanding how the world works, and seeing real-world examples are priceless, as shown in this book. However, beware that the who, how, and what is being done to dismantle democracy is terrifying to learn. You need to start with a willingness to hold the knowledge; once you have it, there is no forgetting it and no turning back. In the last 80 years, Democracy, to date, has not offered up a defense. Hence, we have been slowly taken off course. We need to fortify our defenses and go on the offense.
President Ronald Reagan said it best:
"Freedom is a fragile thing, and it's never more than one generation away from extinction. It is not ours by way of inheritance; it must be fought for and defended constantly by each generation, for it comes only once to a people. And those in world history who have known freedom and then lost it have never known it again."
Here's a not-so-fun fact: you have a six times greater chance of being killed living under an authoritarian regime than you do living and fighting for Democracy (TUCCILLE, 2014). Reading this book will give you the same peace of mind and sense of purpose that we all long for. We have to have purpose in wanting to live free and safe. That must be our eternal focus because freedom is not a given.

In the process of becoming one of the most famous Americans of her era, Susan B. Anthony’s legacy has overshadowed many of her contemporaries who were also active in the fight for civil rights. Among them, few led as interesting or progressive a life as Dr. Mary Edwards Walker, who grew up in a family that encouraged every kind of pursuit for girls and provided an educational foundation that would propel Walker in many fields. In addition to becoming a surgeon, Walker and her family eschewed conventional dress styles in favor of being comfortable, doing so in an era that ensured she would be ridiculed for it. Undeterred, Walker’s work took her across enemy lines during the Civil War, leading to her arrest in the South and to her recognition as one of only eight civilians in American history to be awarded the Medal of Honor for rendering "valuable service to the Government, and her efforts have been earnest and untiring in a variety of ways."
Although her legacy has not endured quite as much as some of the other activists who fought for civil rights in the late 19th century, she has been remembered and celebrated in the past few decades, including the unveiling of a giant statue of her in her hometown of Oswego, New York. She has also been commemorated with a stamp, and in the near future, a U.S. Army fort may be named after her in recognition of her service during the Civil War.
