Beschreibung

A novel of a privileged young man’s twisting, troubled journey through Depression-era America: “A great book by a great author.” —Los Angeles Daily News

Jack Dillon has been a golden child since birth. Blessed with blond locks, glittering eyes, and a perfect voice, he is the most popular child singer in Baltimore. But when puberty robs him of his voice and the stock market wipes out his family fortune, Jack is forced to rebuild. Over the next fifteen years, Jack will see it all. From Maryland to California and back again, he will become a football star, a soldier, and a tramp. Despite all that life throws at him, he never loses his eye for beauty, or his hunger for a woman he has known since childhood. But to find happiness in the face of the Depression, Jack must learn that no matter how the world has changed him, part of his soul remains as pure as the first note he sang.

“James M. Cain is one novelist who has something to teach just about any writer, and delight just about any reader.” —Anne Rice, #1 New York Times–bestselling author of Interview with a Vampire

Joyeux Noël mes amis! Who am I? And who murdered me? A Christmas short story from the Times bestselling cosy crime author

Richard Ainsworth is preparing for the Christmas of his dreams: quiet, no guests at his French B&B and his favourite films on the TV. None of which seems on the cards when his rural peace is shattered by the unexpected arrival of a familiar face.

Valérie d’Orçay has hotfooted it from Paris with her chihuahua in tow and an invitation to a Christmas themed murder mystery game. Richard begrudgingly dresses up as Father Christmas, but the costume becomes the least of his worries when he realises this isn't a game to everyone.

It all started one blizzardy Kansas night when a half frozen Indian staggers into Somerville and dies right there on the floor of Wilson’s Barbershop…but not before telling a crazy story and showing a lump of gold that looks strangely like a golden buffalo patty. Immediately, the story spreads about a Midas buffalo that…ahem…poops golden chips. The normally rational townsfolk become crazed with gold fever and set off en masse to capture this magical beast, but a few folks aren’t so sure. Libby Barrett, ace reporter for the Somerville Independent, suspects someone is playing a prank on the town, but what to make of the golden buffalo chip and the very dead Indian? It’s a puzzle that Libby sets her sights to solve; a quest for truth that very quickly turns deadly.

Mary Cholmondeley was born in Hodnet near Market Drayton in Shropshire on June 8th 1859, the third of eight children. Her father was appointed rector in 1874 in succession to his father. Much of the first 30 years of her life was taken up with helping her sickly mother run the household and her father with parish work, and she herself suffered with asthma.

Mary began writing with in her teens. She wrote in her journal in 1877, "What a pleasure and interest it would be to me in life to write books. I must strike out a line of some kind, and if I do not marry (for at best that is hardly likely, as I possess neither beauty nor charms) I should want some definite occupation, besides the home duties."

Mary began by publishing some stories in The Graphic and her first novel ‘The Danvers Jewels’ a detective story followed in 1887. It was followed by Sir Charles Danvers (1889), Diana Tempest (1893).

After her father retired in 1896, she moved with him and her sister Diana to Condover Hall before selling it to move to Albert Gate Mansions in Knightsbridge, London.

Mary wrote the best seller ‘Red Pottage’ in 1899. It satirised religious hypocrisy and the conceit of country life. It was denounced as immoral. It also explored female sexuality.

During the war she did clerical work in the Carlton House Terrace Hospital. The sisters moved in
1919 to 4 Argyll Road, Kensington, where Mary died, unmarried, on 15th July 1925.
