Synopsis

This history and critique of classic scary films “honors Universal’s horror legacy. . . . an excellent resource for film students and monster movie fanatics” (Library Journal). In 1931 Universal Studios released Dracula starring Bela Lugosi. This box office success was followed by a string of films featuring macabre characters and chilling atmospherics, including Frankenstein, The Mummy, and The Invisible Man. With each new film, Universal established its place in the Hollywood firmament as the leading producer of horror films, a status it enjoyed for more than twenty years. In The Monster Movies of Universal Studios, James L. Neibaur examines the key films produced by the studio from the early 1930s through the mid-1950s. In each entry, Neibaur recounts the movie’s production, provides critical commentary, considers the film’s commercial reception, and offers an overall assessment of the movie’s significance. Neibaur also examines the impact these films had on popular culture, an influence that resonates in the cinema of fear today. From the world premiere of Dracula to the 1956 release of The Creature Walks among Us, Universal excelled at scaring viewers of all ages—and even elicited a few chuckles along the way by pitting their iconic creatures against the comedic pair of Abbott and Costello. The Monster Movies of Universal Studios captures the thrills of these films, making this book a treat for fans of the golden age of horror cinema.   “Studio stills and trade ads for several of the films add a suitably scary touch to this treat for fans and scholars alike. ― Booklist “An impressive work of film scholarship.” ― Cinema Retro

The question of control for Black women is a costly one. From 1986 onwards, the trajectory of Janet Jackson’s career can be summed up in her desire for control. Control for Janet was never simply just about her desire for economic and creative control over her career but was, rather, an existential question about the desire to control and be in control over her bodily integrity as a Black woman. This book examines Janet’s continuation of her quest for control as heard in her sixth album, The Velvet Rope. Engaging with the album, the promotion, the tour, and its accompanying music videos, this study unpacks how Janet uses Black cultural production as an emancipatory act of self-creation that allows her to reconcile with and, potentially, heal from trauma, pain, and feelings of alienation. The Velvet Rope’s arc moves audiences to imagine the possibility of what emancipation from oppression--from sexual, to internal, to societal--could look like for the singer and for others. The sexually charged content and themes of abuse, including self-harm and domestic violence, were dismissed as “selling points” for Janet at the time of its release. The album stands out as a revelatory expression of emotional vulnerability by the singer, one that many other artists have followed in the 20-plus years since its release.

    ABOUT THE FILM
The Usual Suspects is a 1995 neo-noir thriller directed by Bryan Singer. The film follows the interrogation of Roger "Verbal" Kint, a small-time con artist, after a violent heist on a docked ship leaves multiple criminals dead. Kint narrates the story of how he and his crew were manipulated by a mysterious and legendary crime lord, Keyser Söze. As the investigation unfolds, the narrative is built through flashbacks, unreliable narration, and intricate plot twists. The movie explores themes of deception, criminal manipulation, and the blurred lines between truth and lies, keeping viewers on edge until the final moments.

    TRIVIA SAMPLES:

“Christopher McQuarrie had previously worked for a detective agency, and this influenced the depiction of criminals and law enforcement officials in the script.”

“Benicio Del Toro's bizarre dialect in the film was reportedly so unintelligible that during one scene, Stephen Baldwin actually forgot his cue due to being unable to understand what Del Toro had said.”

“The part of Verbal Kint was always intended for actor Kevin Spacey.”

“The idea for this movie started only with the concept of a movie poster of five men in a lineup.”

“All the actors were encouraged to ad lib perplexed reactions to Benicio Del Toro's oddball vocal stylings.”
