The streets were our playground with not a car in sight, where we played all day.On Sundays, bugle boy bands marched past us and in the evening the military band raised our spirits.Life was never dull. Our parents took us to the zoo and for boat rides on the Serpentine.

Chivalry, a code of conduct and a set of ideals, emerged during the early Middle Ages, forming the backbone of the knightly order and defining the conduct of warriors across Europe. The origins of chivalry can be traced back to the feudal system, where the role of the knight was essential in maintaining the social and political structure of the time. Knights were initially seen as mounted warriors serving a lord or king, and their duties were deeply intertwined with the political and military landscapes of medieval society.
The concept of chivalry grew from various sources, including the martial traditions of early medieval Europe, the influence of the church, and the rising importance of courtly love in literature. Early codes of conduct, though not uniform, emphasized qualities such as bravery, loyalty, and honor. These ideals were primarily martial in nature, as knights were expected to protect their lords and lands from invaders. Over time, however, the influence of Christianity began to shape the code of chivalry, adding elements of piety, mercy, and the protection of the weak.
One of the key influences in the development of chivalry was the rise of feudalism. As the Roman Empire fell and Europe entered a period of fragmentation, the feudal system became the dominant form of social and economic organization. Lords granted land to vassals in exchange for military service, and knights became essential for the protection of these lands. This system encouraged the development of a warrior class that was bound by loyalty and honor, principles that would later become central to chivalric codes.

The life, dramatic reign, and enduring legacy of the pharaoh Ramesses the Great, with lessons for the present, from internationally acclaimed Egyptologist Toby Wilkinson

Ramesses II ruled the Nile Valley and the wider Egyptian empire from 1279 to 1213 B.C., one of the longest reigns in pharaonic history. He was a cultural innovator, a relentless self-promoter, and an astute diplomat—the peace treaty signed after the Battle of Kadesh was the first in recorded history. He outbuilt every other Egyptian pharaoh, leaving behind the temples of Abu Simbel; the great hypostyle hall of Karnak; the tomb for his wife Nefertari; and his own memorial, the Ramesseum.

His reputation eclipsed that of all other pharaohs as well: he was decried in the Bible as a despot, famed in literature as Ozymandias, and lauded by early antiquarians as the Younger Memnon. His rule coincided with the peak of ancient Egypt’s power and prosperity, the New Kingdom (1539–1069 B.C.).

In this authoritative biography, Toby Wilkinson considers Ramesses’ preoccupations and preferences, uncovering the methods and motivations of a megalomaniac ruler, with lessons for our own time.

Make no mistake, education in America is undeniably broken and careering off the tracks. This viewpoint is shared from the perspective of a father who had children navigating the education system, a husband with a wife actively contributing to the education system, and an entrepreneur who developed and sold educational resources to public schools around the country. These unique vantage points have provided an invaluable insight into the inner workings of the American education system.
This book aims to offer an intimate glimpse behind the curtains, shedding light on the multitude of factors, policy decisions, and political entanglements that have contributed to the current state of our public education system. It serves as a wake-up call, revealing a myriad of issues that the majority of parents are blissfully unaware of, issues that are quietly eroding the foundations of our children's education. In addition to the author's personal experiences, we conducted interviews with 69 former teachers and administrators to gain a comprehensive understanding of how education has evolved over the years, and unfortunately, the findings indicate a negative trend. If parents were aware of these disconcerting revelations, it is safe to assume that they would have legitimate concerns.
The purpose of this book is to reveal the true extent of the challenges that plague our education system in America, in the hopes of igniting a collective desire to take action and secure a brighter future for education in our nation.
