Sinopsis

In "The Long Arm of the Mounted," James French Dorrance weaves a gripping narrative set against the backdrop of the Canadian wilderness, showcasing the diligent efforts of the Royal Northwest Mounted Police. Dorrance employs a vivid literary style that blends rich description with stark realism, effectively capturing both the serene beauty and harsh realities of frontier life. The novel is infused with themes of justice, duty, and the moral complexities faced by those in law enforcement, examining the profound impact of colonialism on indigenous populations during the late 19th century. Dorrance's keen eye for detail and character-driven storytelling invite readers into a world defined by both adventure and ethical dilemmas, resonating with the Western literary tradition while offering a fresh perspective on law and order in a changing landscape. James French Dorrance, an established writer influenced by the rugged landscapes and historical narratives of his native Canada, brings a personal connection to this subject. Having conducted extensive research into the history of the Mounties and their role in Canadian society, Dorrance's own experiences living in remote areas imbue his writing with authenticity. His passion for storytelling, combined with a profound understanding of the complexities of human ethics, moves readers to ponder the responsibilities of those who uphold the law. This book is a must-read for fans of historical fiction and those interested in the intricate relationship between law enforcement and societal change. Dorrance's thoughtful exploration of conscience and duty presents a compelling narrative that prompts reflection, making "The Long Arm of the Mounted" not just a thrilling adventure but also an important commentary on justice and morality in a rapidly evolving world.

Increasingly and mistakenly viewed as a single scandal within the United States government, what is commonly referred to as the Watergate scandal serves as an overarching term for a series of scandals beginning in 1971 and extending through 1974, although more than any other, it refers to the specific break-in at the Watergate Hotel and office complex in Washington, D.C. The crisis, originating in a secretive battle between the two major political parties, the Nixon White House’s paranoia, and the ensuing conflict concerning the release of confidential information to the public, induced senior government officials into committing crimes (most notoriously petty burglary) and coverups for the purposes of character assassination and inter-political espionage, and it ultimately resulted in the first and only resignation of a sitting American president, Richard Milhous Nixon. Watergate has since become so synonymous with scandal that “gate” is typically added to the end of words associated with scandals even today.
In the wake of the seemingly peculiar burglary, gradual media and judicial pursuits of the thread of scandals led from one thing to another over the following years until it began to culminate with Congressional impeachment proceedings and a momentous showdown between the President and the Supreme Court over the release of presidential tapes, a moment in which Nixon seriously considered defying the Court and initiating a constitutional crisis. When he at last surrendered them, excerpts were blatantly missing, most famously an 18 minute stretch. Given the flurry of activities, it has only been in recent years that historians have gained a full measure of the nation’s perilous status during the intense battle between the various branches of the federal government, and the American public’s view of government in general took a decidedly negative turn.

"We don't yet know where the current battle is headed. But Puri's 'first cut' will help us greatly in fathoming how we got here." – Patrick Porter, Professor of International Security, University of Birmingham
    ***
When Vladimir Putin invaded Ukraine on 24 February 2022, many in the West were left stunned at his act of brutal imperialism. To those who had been paying attention, however, the warning signs of the bloodshed and slaughter to come had been there for years.
Tracing the relationship between the two countries from the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1991 to Putin's invasion in 2022, what emerges from this gripping and accessible book is a portrait of a nation caught in a geopolitical tug of war between Russia and the West. While Russia is identified as the sole aggressor, we see how Western bodies such as the EU and NATO unrealistically raised Ukraine's expectations of membership before dashing them, leaving Ukraine without formal allies and fatally exposed to Russian aggression.
As a former international observer, Samir Puri was present for several of the major events covered in this book. He uses this experience to ask honestly: how did we get here? Why does Vladimir Putin view Ukraine as the natural property of Russia? Did the West handle its dealings with these countries prudently? Or did it inflame the tensions left amidst the ruins of the Soviet Union? Were there any missed opportunities to avert the war? And how might this conflict end?

During the past three decades, Iceland has attained a strong presence in the world through its musical culture, with images of the nation being packaged and shipped out in melodies, harmonies, and rhythms. What 'Iceland' means for people, both at home and abroad, is conditioned by music and its ability to animate notions of nature and nationality. In six chapters that range from discussions of indie rock ballads to 'Nordic noir' television music, Dissonant Landscapes describes the capacity of musical expression to transform ideas about nature and nationality on the northern edges of Europe.

Self-care is the conscious practice of taking care of oneself—physically, mentally, and emotionally—by engaging in activities that promote well-being. It is about recognizing the need for balance and nurturing our whole self. When we engage in self-care, we are actively choosing to invest in our health and happiness, which in turn enhances our ability to care for others and handle life’s challenges. It’s a practice that requires time, effort, and commitment, but its benefits are immeasurable.

The connection between mind, body, and spirit is at the heart of self-care. Each of these areas is intricately linked, and neglecting one can affect the others. For example, mental stress can lead to physical fatigue, and physical health challenges can impact our emotional state. When we address our self-care needs holistically, we are nurturing all aspects of our being, fostering a sense of harmony that radiates throughout our lives. By giving attention to each part of ourselves—our thoughts, our body, and our spirit—we cultivate a sense of balance and fulfillment that supports long-term well-being.
