Summary

In the 1950s, thriving commerce, strong leadership, and geographical good fortune made Illinois one of the most envied states in the nation. Today, long-festering problems have left it the butt of jokes and threatened it with fiscal catastrophe. In Fixing Illinois, James D. Nowlan and J. Thomas Johnson use their four decades of experience as Springfield veterans and government observers to propose solutions that are sure to ignite debate--and action.
Fixing Illinois takes on ills from out-of-control benefits spending to the pension debacle, from high corporate tax rates to the soaring cost of higher education. Avoiding partisanship, Nowlan and Johnson argue for serious decisions and long-term planning that place the good of the state over parochial or regional interests.
Among their more than ninety proposals to change the workings of Illinois state government for the better:An overhaul of state pension systems that includes more reasonable benefits and lengthening of the retirement age, among other changes;Broadening of the tax base to include services and reduction in rates;Raising funds with capital construction bonds to update and integrate the antiquated information systems used by state agencies;Uprooting the state's entrenched culture of corruption via public financing of elections, redistricting reform, and revolving door prohibitions for lawmakers
Pointed, honest, and pragmatic, Fixing Illinois is a plan for effective and honest government that seeks an even nobler end: restoring our faith in Illinois's institutions and reviving a sense of citizenship and state pride.

Social justice matters because we—each of us—matter. Unless we learn to co-exist as equals, we will never live optimally. To denigrate any one of us is to demean all of us.
Absent the wholesale embrace of social justice, we risk succumbing to human tendencies to stereotype, "otherize," and scapegoat. Those tendencies, left unchecked, lead to horrific ends.
When we see ourselves in others, we understand that our shared humanity eclipses all else. Through our disagreements, we must never doubt the dignity and worth of the other.
Certain facts and factors that cause misalignments in the social order—inequality and inequity—social injustice—but there are ways to intervene and interrupt them. This book offers 10 ways we can advance social justice.
We pay a cost for failing to internalize and act upon history's lessons. For example, our history teems with examples of fractious relations among racial, ethnic, and cultural groups and an overarching white supremacist ideology that places some at an advantage at the expense of others. Recognizing our shared humanity—and the power of "we"—and rectifying disparities and inequities are among the chief aims of social justice initiatives.
Achieving social justice is an aspirational pursuit—an ongoing journey that can be fraught with peril and disappointment. It is nonetheless an odyssey worth taking—a quest so many of us have no choice but to embrace. Introspection, engagement, and advocacy are essential stops along the way.

A collection of George W. Bush–era observations and interviews from a former priest turned activist for peace—a Thomas Paine for modern times. Much of our current media makes us feel powerless and unconscious. These commentaries are designed to make us conscious and aware of the power we must build humane national and international polities.“Blase Bonpane is a true guerilla for peace, an exception to the rulers. From the occupation of Iraq to the war at home; from the coup in Haiti to the prisons of the U.S., Bonpane cuts through the lies to tell it like it is. For years, his commentaries have been broadcast over the airwaves of Pacifica station KPFK in Los Angeles. Today, in a world dominated by occupation, war and a crackdown on civil liberties and human rights, these commentaries become an essential counterbalance to the lies. Common Sense for the Twenty-First Century is evidence that the voices of the silenced majority can and must be heard.” —Amy Goodman, broadcast journalist, host of Democracy Now! “Tom Paine was a pamphleteer who proclaimed the need for revolution in 1776. Common Sense for the Twenty-First Century is based on the need for a moral revolution in our own time. This was the call made by Dr. Martin Luther King. This is the call today made by Blase Bonpane, who rejects the ancient tools of clubs, spears, guns and bombs, while promoting the non-violent tools of dialogue together with militant grass roots action. Blase believes firmly that we can have a future of international participatory democracy directed toward distributive justice.” —Martin Sheen, actor and activist

This study reveals how our monetary system reinforces scarcity, and how communities are already using new paradigms to foster sustainable prosperity.

In the United States and across Europe, our economies are stuck in an agonizing cycle of repeated financial meltdowns. Yet solutions already exist, not only our recurring fiscal crises but our ongoing social and ecological debacles as well. These changes came about not through increased conventional taxation, enlightened self-interest, or government programs, but by people simply rethinking the concept of money.

In Rethinking Money, Bernard Lietaer and Jacqui Dunne explore the origins of our current monetary system—built on bank debt and scarcity—revealing how its limitations give rise to so many serious problems. The authors then present stories of ordinary people and communities using new money, working in cooperation with national currencies, to strengthen local economies, create work, beautify cities, provide education, and more. These real-world examples are just the tip of the iceberg—over four thousand cooperative currencies are already in existence.

The book provides remedies for challenges faced by governments, businesses, nonprofits, local communities, and even banks. It demystifies a complex and critically important topic and offers meaningful solutions that will do far more than restore prosperity—it will provide the framework for an era of sustainable abundance.

Dark Agenda - The War to Destroy...

New York Times bestselling author David Horwitz exposes not only the progressive war against Christianity but also a war against America and its founding principles—which are Christian in their origin. Dark Agenda is about an embattled religion, but, most of all, it is about our imperiled nation. Tackling a broad range of issues from prayer in the schools to the globalist mindset, Horowitz traces the anti-Christian movement to its roots in communism. When the communist empire fell, progressives did not want to give up their utopian anti-God illusions, so instead they merely changed the name of their dream. Instead of “communism,” progressives have re-branded their movement as “social justice.” Dark Agenda shows how progressives are prepared to use any means necessary to stifle their opponents who support the concepts of religious liberty that America was founded on and how the battle to destroy Christianity is really the battle to destroy America.

    Regency Spies - Secret Histories...

Sue Wilkes reveals the shadowy world of Britain's spies, rebels and secret societies from the late 1780s until 1820. Drawing on contemporary literature and official records, Wilkes unmasks the real conspirators and tells the tragic stories of the unwitting victims sent to the gallows. In this 'age of Revolutions', when the French fought for liberty, Britain's upper classes feared revolution was imminent. Thomas Paine's incendiary Rights of Man called men to overthrow governments which did not safeguard their rights. Were Jacobins and Radical reformers in England and Scotland secretly plotting rebellion? Ireland, too, was a seething cauldron of unrest, its impoverished people oppressed by their Protestant masters. Britain's governing elite could not rely on the armed services even Royal Navy crews mutinied over brutal conditions. To keep the nation safe, a 'war chest' of secret service money funded a network of spies to uncover potential rebels amongst the underprivileged masses. It had some famous successes: dashing Colonel Despard, friend of Lord Nelson, was executed for treason. Sometimes in the deadly game of cat-and-mouse between spies and their prey, suspicion fell on the wrong men, like poets Wordsworth and Coleridge. Even peaceful reformers risked arrest for sedition. Political meetings like Manchester's 'Peterloo' were ruthlessly suppressed, and innocent blood spilt. Repression bred resentment and a diabolical plot was born. The stakes were incredibly high: rebels suffered the horrors of a traitor's death when found guilty. Some conspirators' secrets died with them on the scaffold... The spy network had some famous successes, like the discoveries of the Despard plot, the Pentrich Rising and the Cato St conspiracy. It had some notable failures, too. However, sometimes the 'war on terror' descended into high farce, like the 'Spy Nozy' affair, in which poets Wordsworth and Coleridge were shadowed by a special agent.
