Sinopse

In "Captain Cook's Journal During the First Voyage Round the World made in H.M. bark 'Endeavour,'" James Cook presents an intricate tapestry of exploration and discovery that meticulously chronicles his groundbreaking journey from 1768 to 1771. Written in a candid yet eloquent style, the journal blends vivid descriptions of unfamiliar landscapes, indigenous cultures, and scientific observations, reflecting the Enlightenment ideals of curiosity and empirical inquiry. The text stands as both a personal memoir and a pivotal historical document that captures the spirit of maritime exploration amidst the broader context of European imperial ambitions and shifting worldviews in the 18th century. James Cook, a skilled navigator and cartographer, was driven by a profound desire to chart the unknown territories of the Pacific. His experiences in the Royal Navy and his interaction with various cultures shaped his understanding of the world, making his journal not just an account of naval achievements but also a thoughtful reflection on the encounters between different peoples. Cook's meticulous attention to detail and commitment to scientific exploration set new standards for future voyages. Readers interested in the history of exploration, colonial encounters, or maritime literature will find "Captain Cook's Journal" an invaluable resource. A poetic sequence using the 1841 slave revolt aboard the brig Creole as a lens through which to view the vitality of Black lives and the afterlife of slavery. In 1841, the only successful, large-scale revolt of American-born enslaved people erupted on the ship Creole. 135 people escaped chattel slavery that day. The event was recounted in US Senate documents, including letters exchanged between US and British consulates in The Bahamas and depositions from the white crew on the ship. There is no known record or testimony from the 135 people who escaped. Their story has been lost to time and indifference. Quenton Baker’s ballast is an attempt at incomplete redress. With imagination, deep empathy, and skilled and compelling lyricism, Baker took a black marker to those Senate documents and culled a poetic recount of the Creole revolt. Layers of ink connect readers to Baker’s poetic process: (re)phrasing the narrative of the state through a dexterous process of hands-on redactions.ballast is a relentless, wrenching, and gorgeously written book, a defiant reclamation of one of the most important but overlooked events in US history, and an essential contribution to contemporary poetry.

    Black Power and the American...

In 1970, C. T. Vivian, a close colleague of Martin Luther King, Jr. and a member of his executive staff, sat down to take stock of the civil rights movement and the progress it had made. His assessment was that it failed, and that the blame lay in the existence of myths about America.

As prophetic today as it was fifty years ago, Vivian's voice rings out as a critique and a call to action for a society in deep need of justice and peace.

The civil rights struggle that began when Rosa Parks, a seamstress in Montgomery, Alabama, decided to sit in the front of a bus has deeply altered American society and the American conscience. Yet from several perspectives, that movement has resulted in failure. The Black struggle for independence is more of an uphill climb than ever. Why? C. T. Vivian asserts that the civil rights movement failed because it was built on certain myths about America:

    ● the myth that Americans will do what is right as soon as they know what is right.

    ● the myth that legislation leads to justice.

    ● the myth that America is an open society where any minority group can advance.

    ● the myth that an ethic of love forms the core of the American conscience.

How do we use our mental images of the present to reconstruct our past? Maurice Halbwachs (1877-1945) addressed this question for the first time in his work on collective memory, which established him as a major figure in the history of sociology. This volume, the first comprehensive English-language translation of Halbwach’s writings on the social construction of memory, fills a major gap in the literature on the sociology of knowledge.
Halbwachs’ primary thesis is that human memory can only function within a collective context. Collective memory, Halbwachs asserts, is always selective; various groups of people have different collective memories, which in turn give rise to different modes of behavior. Halbwachs shows, for example, how pilgrims to the Holy Land over the centuries evoked very different images of the events of Jesus’ life; how wealthy old families in France have a memory of the past that diverges sharply from that of the nouveaux riches; and how working class construction of reality differ from those of their middle-class counterparts.

With a detailed introduction by Lewis A. Coser, this translation will be an indispensable source for new research in historical sociology and cultural memory.
