Nelson is known across the world for his decisive victory at Trafalgar, made all the more legendary by the fact that he was mortally wounded at the height of his greatest feat. And it is understandable that any man who could thwart Napoleon’s ambitions as well as Nelson did would earn a place in the history books. But Nelson embodied every virtue of his homeland as a dashing, courageous military officer who was impeccably cultured, and the best at what he did. Indeed, as the personification of the supremacy of the Royal Navy, the man and his life had a powerful resonance well before his death. 
  Before Trafalgar, Nelson had already earned enduring fame for the British victory at the Battle of the Nile. In 1798, he was given command of a small squadron and sent ahead to Gibraltar, and eventually given instructions to hunt down and destroy Napoleon’s fleet. Indeed, the coming battle was the battle of annihilation Nelson had sought – of 13 French battleships engaged, 2 were destroyed and 9 were captured. British losses were negligible, with no ships lost and about 900 killed or wounded. French casualties were at least 2,000, with thousands more captured. The French Mediterranean fleet had been wiped out, and Napoleon’s expeditionary force was now stranded. 
  With Nelson’s decisive victory, the Royal Navy had once again asserted itself as the dominant power in the Mediterranean. At the same time, Nelson’s inability to intercept Napoleon at sea allowed the French transports and ground forces to survive unscathed, and they eventually made their way back to France.

  The foundation of Roman society was built upon a complex hierarchy that influenced daily life, social interactions, and political structures. The paterfamilias, or male head of the household, wielded significant authority over his family, including his wife, children, and even enslaved individuals. Roman families emphasized duty, tradition, and respect for elders, with ancestral lineage playing a crucial role in societal reputation. Women, while largely confined to domestic roles, could exert influence within the household and, in some cases, in business affairs. Marriage alliances were also instrumental in forging political and social ties, reinforcing the interconnected nature of Roman society. 
  Beyond the family, Roman society was stratified into distinct classes, each with its own privileges and restrictions. At the top were the patricians, an elite group of aristocratic families who traditionally held political power. Their wealth and influence allowed them to dominate the Senate and other governing bodies. Below them were the plebeians, a broad class of commoners that included farmers, artisans, and merchants. Although they had fewer political rights in the early Republic, the plebeians gradually gained influence through social and political struggles, such as the Conflict of the Orders. The lowest tier of society consisted of enslaved individuals and freedmen. Slaves were often prisoners of war or those born into servitude, playing essential roles in both households and large-scale economic activities. Freedmen, formerly enslaved individuals who had gained their freedom, occupied an intermediate status, often working as skilled laborers or entrepreneurs while still facing social limitations.

  Although the Declaration of Independence is now considered one of the most important political documents in history, the men that drafted it did not initially favor such a move at the start of the American Revolution. Despite its assumption of governing duties, the Second Continental Congress never intended, at least initially, to become the governing body of a new nation. Instead, it merely hoped to transform the relationship between Britain and her colonies to allow for greater self-government on their side of the Atlantic. Separation between the two was rarely favored, and this initial sentiment coalesced into the Olive Branch Petition, which sought a reasonable motion of reconciliation between George III and the colonies. It was drafted by one of Virginia’s delegates, Thomas Jefferson.  
  	By April of 1776, talk had heated up concerning independence, and a consensus was quickly growing in Congress. However, one problem was in the way: did the Congress have the authority to declare independence for its 13 member colonies? The process was riddled with confusion across the colonies. independence. And of course, simply declaring independence did not mean the British were going to grant it, and during that time, things were looking quite dire for the cause. After the siege of Boston forced the British to evacuate that city in March 1776, Continental Army commander George Washington suspected that the British would move by sea to New York City, the next logical target in an attempt to end a colonial insurrection. He thus rushed his army south to defend the city. 
  In the summer of 1776, the British conducted the largest amphibious expedition in North America’s history at the time, landing over 20,000 troops on Long Island. They easily captured Staten Island, which Washington was incapable of defending without a proper navy. Washington’s army attempted to fight, but Washington was badly outmaneuvered, and his army was nearly cut off from escape.
