Sinopse

Dragonfly Speed explores the fascinating world of dragonflies, focusing on their exceptional flight capabilities and predatory behaviors. It examines how these aerial predators have evolved into highly efficient hunters, offering insights into aerodynamics, neurobiology, and ecological balance. One intriguing fact is that dragonflies possess nearly 360-degree vision, enabling them to spot prey from a considerable distance. The book uses a data-driven approach to present scientific findings, incorporating diagrams and illustrations for clarity.

The book delves into the biomechanics of dragonfly flight, their visual and neural adaptations for hunting, and their ecological role. It reveals how their wing structure, muscle physiology, and sensory systems contribute to their remarkable speed and maneuverability. By analyzing high-speed video recordings and neurological studies, Dragonfly Speed demonstrates the link between the dragonfly's physical adaptations and hunting success.

The book progresses through the basic biology of dragonflies, the mechanics of their flight, and their sensory systems, concluding with their role in ecosystems and conservation challenges.

Serena Williams, born September 26, 1981, is an American professional tennis player. She turned professional in 1995 and retired in September 2022. Along with her sister Venus, she was coached by her parents. Serena has won 73 career singles titles, and is ranked 5th overall. She achieved a "Serena Slam" twice by winning all four major singles titles consecutively. She is also an Olympic gold medalist. Known for her aggressive style, powerful serves, and groundstrokes, her serve is considered one of the greatest in women's tennis. Off the court, Serena is an entrepreneur, philanthropist, and mother.

    CURIOUS FACT SAMPLES:

Serena Williams was born on September 26, 1981, in Saginaw, Michigan, and is the youngest of five daughters. Her parents, Oracene Price and Richard Williams, coached her and her older sister Venus in tennis.

Serena turned professional in October 1995, and won her first major singles title at the 1999 US Open. She became the second African-American woman to win a Grand Slam singles tournament, after Althea Gibson.

In 1997, as a relatively unknown player ranked No. 304, Serena defeated both No. 7 Mary Pierce and No. 4 Monica Seles at the Ameritech Cup Chicago. This made her the lowest-ranked player in the Open Era to defeat two top-10 opponents in one tournament.

Serena achieved her first "Serena Slam" by winning all four major singles titles from the 2002 French Open to the 2003 Australian Open, each time defeating Venus in the final. This accomplishment secured both a career Grand Slam and a non-calendar year Grand Slam for her.

"Throw Out Fifty Things" is truly an eye-opener. According to Blanke, our lives are so filled with junk from the past—from dries up tubes of crazy glue to old grudges—that it's a wonder we can get up in the morning, never mind get to work, care for our children and parents, and just put one foot in front of the other. Blanke wants to start a movement across America of people throwing out fifty things (magazines count as only one!) that will help liberate us from the stuff—both physical and mental—that clutters our lives. It’s the physical stuff that keeps us from being happy and calm in our house—not to mention keeps us from finding our keys in the morning! And it's the clutter in our mind that drags us down and holds us back from living the life we want to live. Blanke takes us through each room in the house and helps us get rid of 'toxic' possessions that remind us of failed relationships, bad jobs, etc., then she'll help us figure out what to keep so we can move forward and find out who we really are!
