Sinopse

Bush Fires Spark explores the multifaceted challenges faced by the Bushmen of Southern Africa, one of the world’s oldest cultures, amidst globalization and modernization. The book uncovers their struggles for land rights, cultural preservation, and self-determination, mirroring similar issues faced by indigenous populations globally. It challenges the common perception of indigenous people as passive victims, instead portraying the Bushmen as active agents shaping their destinies. The book delves into the historical context, examining the impact of colonialism and apartheid on the Bushmen's traditional way of life and their deep connection to the land. Contemporary challenges, such as resource exploitation and cultural erosion, are analyzed through case studies, illustrating the interplay of economic, political, and social forces. It highlights how securing land rights and preserving cultural identity are crucial for their future, while also adapting to modern realities. The book progresses through historical context, contemporary challenges, and potential solutions, drawing from diverse evidence including archival documents, ethnographic fieldwork, and interviews. By centering the voices and experiences of the Bushmen, Bush Fires Spark provides a unique and nuanced understanding of their culture, history, and ongoing struggles, making it a valuable resource for students, scholars, policymakers, and anyone interested in indigenous cultures and human rights.

Albert Fish did not look like a monster. That was what people remembered after the newspapers had printed every sensationalized story, his trial had ended, and Americans were left with trying to understand who Albert Fish was. Pictures showed him with a slight frame, white hair, and mild blue eyes behind wire-rimmed glasses. Those who actually knew him recalled the way he spoke to children, mixing patience, kindness, and gentleness in ways that children recognize and trust without being taught. Neighbors described him as pleasant, and landladies said he was no trouble at all. He paid his rent on time, never raised his voice, and smiled easily and often. His smile reached his eyes like genuine ones do, in a way that cannot be easily faked.
It turned out that for more than 40 years, Albert Fish had been moving through the country, leaving behind him a trail of victims that the authorities had not yet connected and would not connect for years to come. That trail, when it was finally mapped, would test the limits of what the American criminal justice system had ever been asked to confront. He was, according to the psychiatrists who examined him, the most complex case of sexual psychopathy in American history, and he engaged in behaviors so far outside normal human boundaries that many professionals found themselves lacking adequate clinical language to describe him.
The details and the actions of the Son of Sam remain shocking even decades later. Over the course of a seemingly random series of shootings that took place across New York City in 1976 and 1977, Berkowitz taunted law enforcement in highly publicized letters as he continued to elude justice, and when he referred to himself as the “son of Sam” in one of his rambling letters, his notorious nickname came to life. The senseless nature of the crimes and the erratic statements of the man claiming responsibility for them shook the Big Apple to its core as long as the killer remained at large.

In 2008, Celeste Mergens was working with an overcrowded orphanage on the outskirts of Nairobi, Kenya, when she learned that menstruating girls sat on cardboard in their rooms for several days each month.

This set into motion a simple idea—combining a washable, long-lasting pad with taboo-breaking education—that became a catalyst for an unlikely global movement for equity.

Written in short, evocative chapters, The Power of Days tells the story of Mergens's quest to rally a global response to elevate menstrual health, increase universal access to menstrual supplies, shatter stigma through education, and advocate for global policy change. Raised in poverty by a mentally ill parent, Mergens learned early on that building the life she wanted would take equal parts determination and humility, traits that led her to create the kinds of inclusive conversations and solutions she is known for around the globe.

The challenges Mergens faced and the lessons she learned, personally and professionally, and the triumphs and resourcefulness of leaders all over the globe are illuminating to all who wish to make a difference and create a more equitable world.

This enhanced audio recording features an audio-exclusive Q&A between Days for Girls cofounders Celeste and Don Mergens.
