  Tyrannosaurus Rex The: The...

  The massively popular 1990 novel Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton and its subsequent movie adaptations led to a huge resurgence in interest in dinosaurs and the prehistoric world. That interest continues to the present day, even though most of the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park weren’t actually from the Jurassic period. Triceratops, Velociraptor, Tyrannosaurus Rex and the huge sauropods such as Brachiosaurus that feature in the book and movies all actually belong to the Late Cretaceous period, more than 40 million years after the end of the Jurassic. Regardless, certain kinds of dinosaurs remain instantly recognizable, and among them, the “king” is undoubtedly the Tyrannosaurus.  
  	The first discovery of a Tyrannosaurus was made in 1902 and the largest carnivorous dinosaur ever found at the time quickly gripped the popular imagination. Even its name was dramatic - Tyrannosaurus Rex means “King of the Tyrant Lizards.” The T-Rex as it quickly became known didn’t appear until the last age of the Late Cretaceous period, the Maastrichtian, but when it did, it was the biggest and most terrifying of all the theropod predators. The T-Rex was around 13 feet tall at the hips (its tallest point since it isn’t believe to have stood upright), it was over 35 feet long, and it weighed about nine metric tons. Like most therapods, it had very powerful hind legs and much smaller fore legs, so the front legs look almost comically small. This dinosaur also had a large and powerful tail to counterbalance its very large head (some T-Rex skulls are nearly five feet long). Within the skull was a massive jaw lined with teeth up to a foot long. A reconstructive study has estimated that a T-Rex jaw was capable of exerting a pressure of over 55,000 Newtons; the equivalent of almost six tons of pressure. It was fast too, possibly capable of moving at speeds of up to 25 miles per hour.

Author Sarah Austin Casson brings us on her adventures around the world and in her backyard, from the high Himalayas of Nepal and the deep seas of Thailand to her backyard dirt trails in Los Angeles and many other places, to explore how we can all play with life's hard questions. 
  Plenty of us are anxious right now. In 2019, Casson found herself covered in stress eczema, working too many hours as a wilderness conservationist, and sinking under the weight of the world’s hard questions. The hard questions asked, what should we do about our world’s problems and what is my individual and collective role in these problems? 
  Casson looked around and realized that these questions haunt most of us--and that they always seem to pop up when you’re trying to do something else. They showed up asking about deforestation while she enjoyed a to-go cup of coffee with a friend. Pestered her about lithium mining’s ecological impacts as she opened her laptop to watch a romantic comedy. These challenging questions kept showing up to remind her of very reasonable things to panic about at inconvenient times. They wouldn’t disappear no matter how hard she pushed them away. 
  Somehow, though, Casson found that these tough problems always seemed more manageable when she moved her body in nature. As she ran, hiked, and dived, she found she had the mental space to move beyond repetitious panic and start playing with these questions. The key to these thorny problems seemed to be not just in her mind, but in her body itself. 
  Casson realized that these questions don't go away but that we can handle them better. We can play with them. The best way to play with them is outdoors while sweating--physically and mentally.

  Oranges

  A classic of reportage, Oranges was first conceived as a magazine article, but John McPhee kept encountering so much irresistible information that he wrote a book. It is perhaps the last word on the subject (the first came in 500 BC and is attributed to Confucius). McPhee writes about the botany, history, and industry of oranges, from the great orangeries of European monarchs to a fascinating profile of Ben Hill Griffin of Frostproof, Florida, who may be the last of the individual orange barons. 
   
   
   
  Oranges developed in Southeast Asia, and they spread through the world with a timing closely parallel to the spread of Western civilization. It was Columbus himself who brought the first orange seeds to the New World. Botanically, they are spectacularly complicated. They can be completely unripe when they are a brilliant orange and deliciously ripe when they are green as emeralds. Citrus is so genetically perverse that oranges can grow from lime seeds. Most Florida oranges grow on lemon roots. Louis XIV hung tapestries of oranges in the halls of Versailles because oranges and orange trees were the symbols of his nature and his reign. This book, in a sense, is a tapestry of oranges, too—with elements in it that range from the customs of French kings to those of people in the modern Caribbean who split oranges and clean floors with them, one half in each hand.
