Sinopse

Cultural Codes explores the unwritten rules shaping behavior across societies, crucial for navigating our interconnected world. It argues that understanding these often unconscious codes is key to effective communication, successful business interactions, and conflict resolution.

The book reveals how cultural norms influence communication styles, business ethics, and approaches to conflict, providing case studies to illustrate these concepts. For example, differing levels of directness in communication can lead to misunderstandings if not properly interpreted.

The book emphasizes that deeper cultural codes exert a greater influence than overt differences. It dissects communication styles, examines cultural codes in business practices, and analyzes their influence on conflict resolution.

Cultural Codes draws upon ethnographic studies, communication research, and business case analyses, offering a framework for applying cultural understanding in real-world situations. It progresses from fundamental principles to practical applications, equipping readers with tools to foster understanding and collaboration.

Being the subject matter and writer, David takes a no-holds-bar approach to deciphering his past. From being a teenager fed up with the lack of guidance from the adults in his life, to an angry 20-year-old that thinks he knows everything and ultimately a man who had to put the pieces back together after being committed to several psych wards on a number of occasions. He never saw the moment on the end of his bed thinking about the nature of the world resulting in him losing touch with reality. But it was the moment he broke through the pressures in the west: to be better; to work harder; and ultimately chase your dreams. That he realised nothing meant anything. The only purpose in life was to laugh when something was funny, cry when something was sad, move when the wind blew, eat when you were hungry and enjoy ever fleeting moment. However, being a disciplined, calculated, accomplished engineer, this new paradigm didn’t fit in with the persona he had spent a like time creating. On multiple occasions these two conflicting worlds clashed and opened up opportunities for growth and self-discovery. But be prepared. While talking about his underlying issues has become second nature for him, and he has been hospital free for several years, his autobiography is confronting, confusing and potentially eye opening. Unlike the hero he thought he was at a young age, he closes with identifying with the coward within and admitting that just because he couldn’t see a future, it didn’t mean one wasn’t awaiting him around the corner. Similarly, to that which is discussed behind closed doors, he opens with inviting you to his ‘Patient Doctor Privilege’. He contests such a privilege needs to be dissolved for the collective benefit and admits despite the necessity to disconnect at times, that each of us, no matter how fucked up we are or even if we’ve hurt someone, we need to talk about it with one another.

Wars are expensive, both in human terms and monetary ones. But while warfare might be costly it has also, at times, been an important driver of economic change and progress. Over the long span of history nothing has shaped human institutions—and thus the process of economic development—as much as war and violence. Wars made states and states made wars. As the costs of warfighting grew so did state structures, taxation systems and national markets for debt. And as warfare became ever more destructive the incentive for governments to resort to it changed too.

Blood and Treasure looks at the history and economics of warfare from the Viking Age to the war in Ukraine, examining how incentives and institutions have changed over the centuries. It surveys how warfare helped drive Europe's rise to global prominence, and it explains how the total wars of the twentieth century required a new type of strategy, one that took economics seriously.

Underpinning this riveting narrative is a focus on how and why the economics of conflict have changed over time. This is a story of how economics can help to explain the motivations of war, and how understanding the history of warfare can help explain modern economics.

1996: My Backstage Pass to The...

1996. Britpop ruled the airwaves. The tabloids framed reality long before Instagram. Football was finally coming home. Tony Blair was learning to play rock star – and rock stars were learning they could play politics. Everyone was partying hard, and Britain was the coolest place on earth.
Showbiz reporter Dominic Mohan wasn’t watching the party from afar – he was in the room.
Backstage at Knebworth with Oasis. In strip clubs with Robbie Williams. On the phone to Bowie. On the receiving end of Spice Girls gossip, Gallagher gobbiness and tabloid-era chaos. From Euro ’96 euphoria to Brit Awards anarchy, from rave culture to New Labour, Mohan witnessed the moment the UK went from scruffy indie island to global cultural powerhouse.
Part memoir, part cultural autopsy and part riotous tour through the 90s and its greatest year, 1996 is a jaw-dropping front-row seat to the madness, the music, the football, and the politics that reshaped Britain – and created legends along the way.
Three decades on, Mohan returns to the year everything peaked, and asks: what the hell happened, why did it matter, and can it ever happen again?
If you were there – this book will feel like going home.
If you weren’t – you’ll wish you had been.
