Once upon a time, children's music was just Mother Goose, nursery songs, and lullabies. And then came Ella Jenkins.

Ella Jenkins is an American folk singer and living legend dubbed The First Lady of Children's Music. For nearly 70 years, she has been writing and performing music that has entertained and engaged generations of young listeners. In Make a Pretty Song, Ella's life and legacy are captured in vibrant sights, sounds, and stories that leap right off the page.

Born in St. Louis, Missouri, and raised in Chicago, Ella grew up loving music of all kinds—the call-and-response of Cab Calloway, the exciting rhythms of Moroccan and Indian records spun in a local record shop, the bluesy notes her uncle teased from his harmonica. She listened to music from around the world, and no matter what language it was in, she could feel what it meant—the bridge in understanding and feeling that music offers from one heart to another.

When she began working with children, she knew just what to do. She knew music would offer children a kinetic learning experience that engaged them physically, verbally, and empathetically, creating community out of song. Soon, she was recording her own albums and became an international star.

Ella's journey—from the gritty streets of Chicago to the classrooms where she found her calling to an opportunity to raise her voice for freedom alongside Martin Luther King, Jr., to the spotlight of the world's stage—is rhythmically, joyfully, brilliantly illuminated. For readers familiar with Ella Jenkins or new to her work, this nonfiction book offers a treasury of inspiration that touches on American history, civil rights, cultural awareness, and the incredible power of music.

    Lancelot Biggs: Master Navigator...

The Saturn is old, slow, and outclassed. When a secret government contract turns an ordinary Venus-to-Earth shuttle into a timed competition, the Corporation’s oldest freighter finds itself racing the sleek Slipstream—a ship that can cross the void in nearly half the time. Captain Hanson knows the numbers. The engineer knows the limits. Even Sparks, the radio man, can do the math. There is no way the Saturn can win by speed alone.
    Then space itself tears open.
A drifting vacuole—a roaming pocket in the fabric of the void—swallows their rival and threatens to swallow them next. While the Slipstream fights to claw its way free, Lancelot Biggs makes a decision that leaves his captain speechless and his crew convinced he has finally lost his wits. Instead of avoiding the phenomenon, Biggs orders the Saturn directly into it. Cut off from radio contact and carried wildly off course, the crew can only wait as hours stretch and tempers snap. The old ship groans. The engines strain. And somewhere beyond that pocket of warped space lies Earth—and a contract worth millions.
“Lancelot Biggs, Master Navigator” is one of Nelson S. Bond’s most satisfying entries in the long-running Biggs series. Bond pits intuition against experience, youth against tradition, and forces a crew to decide whether to trust a man who refuses to explain himself. It is space opera at its most exuberant: bold gambles, hard science wrapped in humor, and a final maneuver that turns disaster into opportunity.
Nelson S. Bond published widely in Astounding Science Fiction, Blue Book, Amazing Stories, and Planet Stories during the 1930s and 1940s. His Lancelot Biggs tales became a recurring favorite, following the gawky but brilliant First Mate whose offbeat thinking repeatedly saves the day.

  • The Biggest Civil War Battles of 1863 - cover

The Biggest Civil War Battles of...

Americans have long been fascinated by the Civil War and its biggest battles, particularly Gettysburg, Antietam, and Shiloh, all of which involved Robert E. Lee or Ulysses S. Grant. But one of the 6 biggest battles of the war, and the one that took the heaviest toll by % on both armies was fought at the end of 1862 in Tennessee, and it involved neither of those generals. Though Stones River is mostly overlooked as a Civil War battle today, it had a decisive impact on the war. The two armies had both suffered nearly 33% casualties, an astounding number in 1862.
Of all the Civil War battles fought, and of all the victories achieved by Robert E. Lee at the command of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia, the Battle of Chancellorsville is considered the most tactically complex and ultimately the most brilliant Confederate victory of the war. However, it cost them Stonewall Jackson, and the reorganization of the armies and the battle itself played an influential role in the way the Pennsylvania Campaign and the Battle of Gettysburg unfolded later that summer.
Without question, the most famous battle of the American Civil War took place outside of the small town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, which happened to be a transportation hub, serving as the center of a wheel with several roads leading out to other Pennsylvanian towns. From July 1-3, Robert E. Lee’s Confederate Army of Northern Virginia tried everything in its power to decisively defeat George Meade’s Union Army of the Potomac, unleashing ferocious assaults that inflicted nearly 50,000 casualties in all.
While many read about the siege of Vicksburg in the summer of 1863, as well as the desperate straits the Confederate soldiers and Vicksburg residents found themselves in, Grant’s initial attempts to advance towards Vicksburg met with several miserable failures, and it took several months just to get to the point where the Union forces could start a siege.
