Synopsis

Emergency Power Backup addresses the critical need for reliable power solutions in an era increasingly vulnerable to grid instability and power outages. It explores alternative energy sources and the engineering principles behind effective backup systems, highlighting the shift from backup power as a luxury to a necessity.

The book demonstrates evaluating energy needs and selecting suitable alternate sources, such as solar photovoltaic, wind, and battery storage, which are crucial for ensuring power resilience across diverse applications. It emphasizes a proactive approach to designing robust backup systems, essential for industries like healthcare, telecommunications, and residential complexes, where power failures can have catastrophic consequences.

This book bridges the gap between theory and practical application by presenting methodologies for evaluating, designing, and deploying emergency power systems. It builds upon fundamental electrical engineering principles, including circuit analysis and power systems design, while also introducing key concepts in renewable energy.

The book progresses from an overview of emergency power's importance to detailed sections on prime movers, energy storage, and backup system design, using real-world case studies to illustrate practical applications in various settings. It also examines grid-interactive systems and microgrids, showcasing their role in enhancing power resilience and efficiency.

This book aims to provide the surgical students, interns and trainees working in general surgical units with the essential facts and the outlines of diagnosis and management of commonly encountered diseases in the field of general surgery. The book is divided into two sections: the first touches on some selected aspects of principles of surgery and the second covers common surgical diseases of various systems. There is no attempt made to cover any other surgical specialties outside the scope of pure general surgery. However, attempts are made to curtail descriptive text to a minimum and presents facts in a bullet form for clarity and quick revision. The book can, therefore, be used as a compact aid to revision, and a quick pocket reference by the users.

In the early twentieth century, paleoanthropologists interpreted the differences between specimens of an expanding human fossil record as reflecting taxonomic and evolutionary diversity. Why, then, in the 1940s, did geneticist Theodosius Dobzhansky reconfigure human evolution into one, profoundly morphologically variable lineage which changed slowly through time? Neanderthals exposes, for the first time, the history of how conceptions of race have configured interpretations of the first-found human fossils; how assumptions underlying human fossils were and still are interpreted as to species and their evolutionary relationships. No matter how "different" Nazis thought living humans were, differences between Neanderthals and bigger-browed, chunkier-faced specimens and living humans trivialized the differences between living humans. In 1950, without basis, taxonomist Ernst Mayr lumped all fossil and extant humans into three transforming species of genus Homo: transvaalensiserectussapiens; sapiens subsumed humans, Neanderthals, and even less morphologically sapiens-like specimens. In 1962, at a Wenner-Gren Foundation meeting, participants voted to keep these specimens, Neanderthals, and humans in Homo sapiens.Even when Neanderthals were returned to species neanderthalensis, the assumption remained: humans and Neanderthals interbred. In a press release, the Committee that awarded Svante Pääbo the Nobel Prize for "demonstrating" human inheritance of Neanderthal "genes" made clear that his claims were predicated on assuming Neanderthal-human interbreeding. It's remarkable how received wisdom continues to influence paleoanthropologists and molecular anthropologists who then present as fact, to a naïve public, assumptions that are biologically and evolutionarily wrong.

»We are at a turning point in human history. To stop climate breakdown and extinction, environmental movements need to be actively anti-racist and join struggles for social justice.«Carola RacketeIn 2019, Carola Rackete became publicly known for docking the sea rescue vessel »Sea-Watch 3« in Italy and thereby challenging a nationaldecree that contradicted internationalobligations to engage in sea rescue. Due to this act of civil disobedience and her public confrontation of the Italian far right and the structural racism of the EU's Fortress Europe policy, Carola became a powerful symbol for people seeking to take practical action for a world based on justice and equality. Carola has worked in the polar regions since 2011 and holds a degree in natural resources management. Consequently, her book shows how the ecological crises we are facing today are rooted in social and political power structures. The book details moments of the rescue mission but also connects the dots to forced migration and the urgency of our environmental predicament. Overall, it is a call to engage and act to become part of initiatives and movements struggling for social and environmental justice. This version of the book includes a new afterword focused on centring justice and human rights in nature and biodiversity conservation-a topic often overlooked by climate activists in the Global North. The authors will donate the revenue from this book to the association borderline-europe-Menschenrechte ohne Grenzen e.V. in order to launch a new criminalization fund. The money from this fund will be used to support refugees who are criminalized in the EU for fleeingtoEurope.Acknowledgements: This audio book has been made possible by the voluntary contributions of many people, most notably Marysa Abbas who is the voiceover artist of this audioproject, Diane Hielscher who provided her studio "LifeX Lab-wir machen Medien für eine neue Welt" for the recordings and production, Céline Keller who contributed the cover art, Alfio Furnari from Borderline-Europe who managed administration and contracts, the management of liberaudio as well as Anne Weiss who got the projectrolling and connected everyone.
