Sinopsis

Written by former New York Corrections Officer, Jack McKraken, Livin’ the Dream is a deep dive into the beating heart of American Corrections. This book shines a light on the absurdities, inadequacies, and organized chaos of the system that stands between ordinary Americans and the worst violent offenders.

Author of science-fiction novel Beyond Mortal Measure, Jack McKraken breaks into the world of nonfiction writing from his own perspective as he describes a ground-level view of a single Corrections Officer while simultaneously examining the entirety of the US prison system. From the tedium of the day-to-day rounds to the politics of the NYSCOPBA (New York State Correctional Officers & Police Benevolent Association) McKraken depicts the conditions and constraints within which Correction Officers are forced to operate by an entrenched bureaucracy. The book describes prisoner interactions and altercations candidly, often humorously, leaving the reader with a unique perspective into American Justice.

Antelope Hill is proud to publish Livin’ the Dream as its second original work. Jack McKraken’s work is not just a memoir of exciting anecdotes and useful tips, but an account of how one can survive and keep their sanity within one of the most soul-crushing settings known to man. This title is a must-read for anyone who may find themselves in prison, regardless of which side of the bars.

One woman’s story of confronting the monster under the bed

Last Nerve is much more than a trauma memoir. The story begins as Mindy Uhrlaub learns that she carries a gene for the fatal neurodegenerative disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The news, while not surprising, is compounded by the fact that she is caring for her husband, who is undergoing chemotherapy for stage four lymphoma, raising a child with serious behavioral issues, and watching her own mother die of ALS. As she navigates the new territory of having three close relatives with life-threatening situations, she also has to come to terms with the fact that she may have passed the fatal gene to her two sons. Not one to fold, Mindy faces her circumstances head-on, realizing that her race for the elusive cure for ALS is not only for herself but also for her kids, her cousins, and the thousands of other carriers of the fateful gene.

Despite the incredible strain of all these challenges, Mindy manages them with amazing tenderness, persistence, and love. Far from a depressing story of misfortune, Last Nerve is as uplifting and witty as it is raw and real. It’s a testament to hope, the endurance of family, and the resilience of the human spirit.

In this classic work—a blend of memoir, social criticism, and political analysis that remains relevant today—the first Black Congresswoman to serve in American history, New York’s dynamic representative Shirley Chisholm, traces her extensive political struggle and examines the problems that have long plagued the American system of government.
“Shirley Chisholm created a path for me and for so many others. Today, I'm thinking about her inspirational words: 'I am, and always will be a catalyst for change.'” —Kamala Harris
“A tremendously impressive book.” —Washington Post
“I want to be remembered as a woman . . . who dared to be a catalyst of change.” Political pioneer Shirley Chisholm—activist, member of the House of Representatives, and former presidential candidate—was a woman who consistently broke barriers and inspired generations of American women, and especially women of color. Unbought and Unbossed is her story, told in her own words—a thoughtful and informed look at her rise from the streets of Brooklyn to the halls of Congress. Chisholm speaks out on her life in politics while illuminating the events, personalities, and issues of her time, including the schism in the Democratic party in the 1960s and ’70s—all of which speak to us today.
In this frank assessment, “Fighting Shirley” recalls how she took on an entrenched system, gave a public voice to millions, and embarked on a trailblazing bid to be the first woman and first African American President of the United States. By daring to be herself, Shirley Chisholm shows how one person forever changed the status quo.
“What [Chisholm] did was so pioneering. . . . She embraced what made her different and used it as her superpower.” —Regina King
“Her motto and title of her autobiography—Unbought and Unbossed—illustrates her outspoken advocacy for women and minorities during her seven terms in the U.S. House of Representatives.” —National Women’s History Museum

Also, he was the leader of a tribal realm which consisted mainly of Huns, Ostrogoths, Alans and Bulgars, to name a few, in Central Europe and in Eastern Europe.

Vlad the Impaler, or Vlad the Third, was a merciless despot who tried to make an example out of his opponents by impaling them and displaying them in public. He also enjoyed bathing in dead people’s blood and did some other gross, inhumane things. He was the terror of Eastern Europe for many years.

Love’s Journey can be best described as a cross between a spoken word album and an audio book that combines poetry with emotional story telling. It’s more than a collection of poems about love put together. Poems written over a two-decade period organically come together to form a narrative of their own to reveal emotions as the true protagonist of this audio book. The commentaries for each poem help the story to unfold before your ears. They reveal some of the story behind the poems without giving away too much. They also provide clues to help solve some of the mysteries behind the events that inspired such deep emotions. Some mysteries presented are solvable while others aren’t and retain the book’s overall intrigue.
Love’s Journey tells the emotional story of my experiences with love in its various facets over the years in the form of poetry. Romantic love and heartbreak are recurring themes for most of the poems, but there are other forms of love included as well. Why write about these experiences in the form of poetry? Our individual experiences and circumstances may be something that not everyone can relate to. But emotions are universal! We all have them. My poetry is a way that I can emotionally connect with others, especially those with different life experiences. Feel your own emotions in my poetry and connect my words with your own personal experiences with love.
Each poem is enjoyable on its own, but the greatest reward is to be had when viewing them as an episode of a series from my real-life experiences. Listening to Love’s Journey more than once is required to unravel the love mystery that develops from the questions you will naturally ask yourself as you listen to it. You may even learn something from my journey that will benefit you on your very own journey of love. Take notes as you listen and compare them with the provided commentary as you embark on Love’s Journey!
