Layla Turnbull, a single mother, lives with her eighteen-year-old daughter, Chloe, in an ordinary semi-detached house in North London. Chloe is taking her final exams soon and she needs a distinction in Maths to get the University place she wants. The best maths tutor in town lives just four doors down on the same street and Layla asks him to be Chloe’s tutor, but unfortunately, there's a price to pay. The tutor, Master Matchek, comes from Czechoslovakia and has an unusual system that includes spanking the students when they make mistakes or break any of his rules. Not only that, the tutor believes that the mothers are also at fault so he insists that they present themselves for the same punishment later on the same day.  
Layla agrees to the price she has to pay to make sure her daughter gets the distinction she requires. While doing the extra lessons Chloe meets Mary, another student in the class and they become firm friends, with benefits. Mary’s mother and Layla also get together and this book is about their relationships.  
Chloe had been late for her last lesson so her mother, Layla, had to receive the same punishment later on the same day, only the parent’s punishment was doubled. Layla had been in the Mall with her friend June that evening when she learnt that Chloe had been punished so she asked June to drop her off for her punishment on the way home.

Arthur Cecil Gask was born on 10th July 1869 in Marylebone, London. 
 
He began his career as an author late in life.  It was only in 1920 when he and his second wife and family emigrated to Adelaide, South Australia to set up a dental practice that writing took its hold. 
 
Gask paid for the publication of his first work, ‘The Secret of the Sandhills’, which was an immediate success, both commercially and critically.  
 
Over the next 3 decades Gask wrote over thirty books, usually featuring his detective invention Gilbert Larose, as well as short stories.  Many of his works were translated, serialised and even broadcast on the radio.  HG Wells and Bertrand Russell were avid fans. 
 
In the last years of his life he was still writing, usually two novels a year. 
 
Arthur Gask died on 25th June 1951, in Adelaide, Australia.  He was 81 
 
In this story we meet his most popular character, Detective Gilbert Larose, who, whilst on holiday, is drawn into a case of dogs being poisoned.  But why would anyone do that?
