"The Adventure of the Mazarin Stone" is one of 12 Sherlock Holmes short stories by Arthur Conan Doyle in The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes. It was first published in the Strand Magazine October 1921.
Watson arrives at 221B Baker Street where the page boy Billy shows him a wax effigy of Holmes placed near a curtained window in the sitting room. The effigy produces a shadow on the curtain that, when viewed from outside, is the unmistakable profile of Sherlock Holmes. Using this visual trick, Holmes aims to give a perfect target to a would-be murderer with a rifle. Holmes names his murderer as Count Negretto Sylvius, the diamond thief he has been following in disguise. He gives the criminal's address to Watson, then sends the doctor out the back for the police. As the Count arrives, Holmes has Billy invite him inside, then takes him by surprise when he attempts an assault on the effigy. Holmes then offers the Count and his helper, boxer Sam Merton, freedom if they give up the jewel, or jail if not.

In the first anthology of its kind, Robert Olen Butler and Phong Nguyen assemble an astounding collection of stories that cause listeners to contemplate war, peace, and social justice in a new light. The fourteen stories featured in this volume explore the varied and often unexpected outcomes of violence. The authors explore the tragedies that occur closer to home—not on military battlefields but rather in places that are never meant to be battlefields, like schools and churches. The fiction reveals the violence that renders our most sacred and seemingly safest of places vulnerable.

Not a utopian project, this book asks whether literature has a role in furthering the ongoing pursuit of peace and justice for all. While exploring tragedy, these stories also offer hope for healing, illuminating how people can move forward from the moments when their lives change and how they can regain and reshape safe spaces to find solace.

Long before the modern detective novel took shape, Charles Dickens was already probing the darker corners of human motive, deception, and moral decay.
Hunted Down: The Detective Stories of Charles Dickens gathers Dickens’s most incisive explorations of crime and character, led by the haunting tale of Mr. Julius Slinkton—a man whose impeccable manners and professional respectability conceal a chilling capacity for manipulation. Told through the wary observations of Mr. Sampson, a life assurance manager guided by instinct as much as evidence, the story unfolds as a tense psychological pursuit where suspicion grows quietly and certainty arrives too late.
These narratives are not driven by brute force or sensational violence, but by careful observation, social insight, and the slow tightening of moral consequence. Dickens exposes how ambition, vanity, and greed can thrive behind polished façades, revealing criminals who hide not in shadows, but in plain sight.
Narrated with measured authority by John Riddle, this collection offers a gripping portrait of Victorian society at its most unsettling—where justice is pursued through patience and perception, and where the greatest dangers wear the mask of civility.
