Sinopsis

In "The King of Schnorrers: Grotesques and Fantasies," Israel Zangwill weaves a tapestry of humor and social critique, offering a vivid portrayal of Jewish life in late 19th-century England. Employing a blend of satire and caricature, Zangwill highlights the eccentricities of his characters while delving into themes of identity, community, and the complexities of societal expectations. The book's structure mirrors that of a picaresque novel, where the protagonist's misadventures expose both the absurdities of human behavior and the often-painful intersections of tradition and modernity. Zangwill'Äôs unique literary style, characterized by its witty dialogue and sharp observations, positions this work within the broader context of Jewish literature and the social commentary prevalent during the period. Israel Zangwill, a prominent Jewish author and playwright, was a central figure in the literary movement that sought to articulate Jewish identity in a rapidly changing world. Growing up in the East End of London, Zangwill experienced firsthand the struggles faced by immigrant communities, which greatly influenced his narratives. His interests in social justice and the immigrant experience are vividly reflected in "The King of Schnorrers," where he deftly critiques socio-economic disparities while celebrating the resilience of his characters. This book is a recommended read for those interested in the intersection of humor and social analysis, as Zangwill's work resonates with contemporary themes of identity and cultural negotiation. "The King of Schnorrers" invites readers to not only laugh at the foibles of its characters but also to reflect on the broader aspects of acceptance and humanity, making it an essential addition to the canon of Jewish literature.

Mary Elizabeth Braddon was born in London on the 4th October 1835.

At age 5 her parents separated but her ambition to succeed was not daunted. After being privately educated she took to acting, and the minor roles she obtained where enough to support both her and her mother. This potential career waned as soon as she began writing and secured an income from it.

In 1860, she met John Maxwell, a publisher of periodicals, and moved in with him the following year. At the time Maxwell was already married with five children but his wife was confined to an Irish mental asylum. On her death they married and she had six children by him.

Braddon was prolific and wrote over 80 novels, perhaps the most famous is ‘Lady Audley's Secret’ (1862), which won her both sales and a fortune as a bestseller. She also wrote a number of historical fiction novels which again increased her reputation.

She was equally prolific as a short story writer, primarily supernatural and ghost stories, all of which continue to be anthologized to this day, such is the high regard they are kept in.

Braddon founded Belgravia magazine in 1866, its fare being serialised sensation novels, poems, travel narratives and biographies, along with essays on fashion, history and science, all lavishly illustrated. She also edited Temple Bar magazine.

Mary Elizabeth Braddon died on 4th February 1915 and is buried in Richmond Cemetery.

In this story Colonel Benyon returns from service abroad on sick leave to find that England is very much changed. He accepts a friend’s invitation to take a short recuperation at his home in Cornwall, which has lain empty for some time. The Colonel takes up the offer, but things do not go quite as planned.

From the bestselling author of Holy Hot Mess, a laugh-out-loud look at what happens when life goes a direction we didn't expect and we are forced to reconsider the beliefs, assumptions, and stories that have always steered our course.  Mary Katherine Backstrom grew up the most basic of all youth group kids—pH level 14—and her faith only grew as she led youth ministry, served as a missionary, and went on to become a bestselling Christian author. She knew all the practiced, perfect Sunday school answers and was driving happily down the straight and narrow, until one day her young son asked a simple question: will my Jewish best friend go to hell? In the months and years that followed, that single question continued to snowball. MK challenged and reconsidered every part of the faith she’d been raised to accept so completely. Not That Wheel, Jesus! is Mary Katherine’s hilarious journey from certainty to doubt to going nuclear on the socials (“it was my heresy era”), and then of slowly and painfully finding her way back to a different, less defined faith. It’s the heartfelt and achingly honest story of a spirituality that went off the road and crashed and burned in spectacular fashion, right before God and everybody. And then, slowly, through grace and plenty of therapy, grew richer and deeper than she ever could have imagined.
