Sinopse

"Preserving History" explores the vital role of museum conservation in safeguarding our cultural heritage. Delving into the science, ethics, and practical applications of preserving historical documents, invaluable artworks, and significant artifacts, the book highlights the proactive measures taken to protect cultural memory. Readers will discover how environmental factors like light and humidity degrade artifacts and how conservators use chemical and physical processes to stabilize and restore them. The book uniquely emphasizes the interconnectedness of scientific techniques, ethical considerations, and real-world practices in museum conservation, moving beyond a purely technical approach.

The book progresses by first establishing core conservation principles and then examining challenges in preserving diverse materials, from textiles to metals. It addresses the impact of climate change and the need for innovative strategies. Case studies from museums worldwide illustrate successful and unsuccessful preservation efforts, offering practical insights. Ethical debates, such as the appropriate level of intervention and cultural sensitivity, are explored, encouraging critical thinking about the complex issues facing museum conservators.

God in Her Ruffled Dress, written and narrated by poet and singer-songwriter Lisa B (Lisa Bernstein), explores the human/divine interface: body/spirit, temporal/eternal, illness/wellness.
With an original musical background and bookended by two poem-prayers, it has four sections: “Return to the Body” (on the author’s type 1 diabetes, Biblical scripture, and spiritual transformation); “Drum the Beginning of the World” (jazz masters, the power of singing); “Sever the Head” (pandemic politics); and “Propagate” (a female perspective on love, sensuality, birth, and death).
It was published in paperback by What Books Press. Poems appeared in The Kenyon Review, Ploughshares, Poetry International, Lilith, anthologies on cars and Greek mythology, and elsewhere.

National parks like Yellowstone, Yosemite, and Glacier preserve some of this country's most cherished wilderness landscapes. While visions of pristine, uninhabited nature led to the creation of these parks, they also inspired policies of Indian removal. By contrasting the native histories of these places with the links between Indian policy developments and preservationist efforts, this work examines the complex origins of the national parks and the troubling consequences of the American wilderness ideal. The first study to place national park history within the context of the early reservation era, it details the ways that national parks developed into one of the most important arenas of contention between native peoples and non-Indians in the twentieth century.

The Vikings in Islay - The Place...

The Hebridean island of Islay is well-known for its whisky, its wildlife and its association with the MacDonald Lords of the Isles. There would seem to be little reason to dwell on its fate at the hands of marauding Northmen during the Viking Age. Despite a pivotal location on the 'sea road' from Norway to Ireland, there are no convincing records of the Vikings ever having been there. In recent years, historians have been keen to marginalise the island's Viking experience, choosing instead to focus on the enduring stability of native Celtic culture, and tracing the island's modern Gaelic traditions back in an unbroken chain to the dawn of the Christian era. However, the foundations of this presumption are flawed. With no written accounts to go by, the real story of Islay's Viking Age has to be read from another type of source material - the silent witness of the names of local places. The Vikings in Islay presents a systematic review of around 240 of the island's farm and nature names. The conclusions drawn turn traditional assumptions on their head. The romance of Islay's names, it seems, masks a harrowing tale of invasion, apartheid and ethnic cleansing.
