Summary

Adoption of the word gemba has lagged behind adoption of thekaizen concept in the world. This is unfortunate butunderstandable; being present on the gemba can be a greatermind-set and behavior change than simply doing kaizen. The Cambridge Business English Dictionary is one of a fewsources, as of November 2011, to give the definition of gembaas an English word:gemba/'gemb/ nounin Japanese business theory, the place where things happenin manufacturing, used to say that people whose job is tomanufacture products are in a good place to makeimprovements in the manufacturing processThis definition captures the spirit of gemba as it pertains tokaizen, but we must first understand gemba in its broadercontext beyond manufacturing. The meaning of Gemba is "real place" in Japanese language, which is actually a place which is known to host real action. This word is extensively used in spoken Japanese language. So,in live TV reporting for an earthquake this word is used whenthe reporting is meant to be telecasted from the scene itself.Hence, all sorts of crime scene, film location, workplace, excavation site, meeting place etc. etc. can all be referred to asGemba - a place where facts and evidences can be found. Butfrom business perspective, the customer satisfaction derived outof the value added services is the ones which are referred toas Gemba. So, in Japan, Gemba is as popular a word asKaizen is. Not only that, experts of Japanese business sectoropioned that both these words have greater significance inbusiness parlance as well, so much so that important businessdecisions are taken based on the understanding of a manager'srespective Gemba. Any business operation practices threeactivities to maximize their profit, without which they don't existand they are to develop, produce and sell. And in braodersense, Gemba forms the common ground of all these threemajor activities, wherein they occur. In this present project, we will use the word in this narrowercontext because these sites have been one of the businessarenas most neglected by management. Managers seem tooverlook the workplace as a means to generate revenue, andthey usually place far more emphasis on such sectors asfinancial management, marketing and sales, and productdevelopment. When management focuses on the gemba, orwork sites, they discover opportunities for making the companyfar more successful and profitable. In many service sectors, the gemba is where the customerscome into contact with the services offered. In the hotelbusiness, for instance, gemba is everywhere: in the lobby, thedining room, guest rooms, the reception desk, the check-incounters, and the concierge station. At banks, the tellers areworking in the gemba, as are the loan officers receivingapplicants. Most departments in these service companies haveinternal customers with whom they have interdepartmentalactivity, which also represents the gemba. A telephone call to ageneral manager, production manager, or quality manager at aJapanese plant is likely to get a response from the manager'sassistant to the effect that "He is out at the gemba."

It was not easy being a woman of ambition in early twentieth–century England, much less one who wished to be a scientist. Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin overcame prodigious obstacles to become a woman of many firsts: the first to receive a PhD in astronomy from Radcliffe College, the first promoted to full professor at Harvard, the first to head a department there. And, in what has been called "the most brilliant PhD thesis ever written in astronomy," she was the first to describe what stars are made of.Payne-Gaposchkin lived in a society that did not know what to make of a determined schoolgirl who wanted to know everything. She was derided in college and refused a degree. As a graduate student, she faced formidable skepticism. Revolutionary ideas rarely enjoy instantaneous acceptance, but the learned men of the astronomical community found hers especially hard to take seriously. Though welcomed at the Harvard College Observatory, she worked for years without recognition or status. Still, she accomplished what every scientist yearns for: discovery. She revealed the atomic composition of stars—only to be told that her conclusions were wrong by the very man who would later show her to be correct.

Naturally, as technological advances and the creation of flying aircraft became realities, the sighting of UFOs increased, as did the interest in potential contact with aliens. While incidents like the one at Roswell led to conspiracies and a craze among those who insisted the government was hiding proof of extraterrestrials’ existence, governments across the world were actually secretly studying UFO sightings by the mid-20th century.
Given all of that, it would hardly be groundbreaking for scientists in the 20th century to have a lunchtime discussion in which the search for extraterrestrial life arises, and the question of where it might reside is innocuous enough. However, a furor was created somewhat innocently when physicist Enrico Fermi voiced his “casual lunchtime remark” in the presence of colleagues in 1950. The august company included Edward Teller, a Hungarian physicist, Herbert York, am American nuclear physicist whose lineage included Mohawk heritage, and Emil Konopinski, a nuclear physicist of Polish origin. Fermi himself, an Italian-American born in Rome, was renowned for developing a statistical base for subatomic phenomena, work on nuclear alterations caused by neutrons, and for leading the first controlled chain reaction from nuclear fission. A gifted theoretician, he advanced the field of statistical mechanics, and won the Nobel Prize over a decade before he asked his important question. The four men represented a fair percentage of the research core during the Manhattan Project that developed and produced the atomic bomb.
Despite the sophisticated conversation that appears to have followed, Fermi’s oft-asked question soon became elevated within the scientific community as the Fermi Paradox. The subsequent musings on our search for extraterrestrial life have grown to such proportions that extensive lists of solutions to the inquiry proliferate with each passing year.
