At stake was up to 5 million barrels a day of high-grade crude oil. At risk were the lives of 1,300 employees of the major oil companies and their families working in Iran in December 1978, when revolutionaries overthrew the Shah and wanted everything that went with him - including Western oil personnel - out of the country, or dead. At the helm was the author of this personal and highly revealing memoir. A Scottish lawyer working for the French oil company, Total, in Ahwaz, he had to draw on every inner resource - and unknown telex skills - to airlift his wife, friends, colleagues and others safely out of Iran, first to Abadan and thence to Bahrain and Athens. A senior American manager had already been murdered. These were anxious times for expatriate communities on the Gulf. Evacuate! is essentially a story of frontier life in a state run by a dictatorial Shah that tragically turned back the clock and submitted to clerical rule under Khomeini. As Centurion tanks and troops filled the streets, to be replaced by armed thugs chanting death slogans to Westerners, the author laboured night and day to organise a safe way out. Especially relevant today, his story will appeal to petroleum buffs everywhere, to expatriates, and to lovers of that beautiful and misguided country - Iran.

This historical tour explores how FDR’s domestic programs helped revitalize a region devastated by natural disasters and the Great Depression.   While many people are familiar with the New Deal’s sweeping initiatives, few have a nuanced sense of what this “alphabet soup” of organizations actually did on a local level. In this fascinating book, historian Christopher Epting looks at the various New Deal projects undertaken in Orange County, showing how they met the myriad needs of its struggling communities.   Unpredictably harsh elements wreaked havoc in Orange County during the Great Depression. The Long Beach earthquake of 1933 and the 1938 Santa Ana River flood took numerous lives, decimated buildings and destroyed much of the county's namesake citrus industry. In response, Orange County received federal public aid through the Works Progress Administration, Civilian Conservation Corps and other agencies. Epting reveals their efforts in this tour of the buildings, bridges, harbors, trails, libraries, highways and other infrastructure gains—many still in use—that were revitalized by President Roosevelt’s New Deal.

I had no idea that I would like Malaysia. I even thought I might just fly through Kuala Lumpur and only see the airport. Life had other plans. As I travelled around South East Asia I would keep coming back, each time I would see a new side of Malaysia and I would see Kuala Lumpur differently - after all, each time I was a different person. From the rooftop pool in Kuala Lumpur to the ancient cloud forest in The Cameron Highlands, from orangutans and sun bears in Kuching on one side of Borneo to the sacred mountain Kota Kinabalu on the other, as well as discovering Sucimurni, the ancient principle of wellbeing at Tanjung Jara along the way.Although I started writing these mini-guides to share the hotel, spa and the rest, the retreat in a box I dreamt of when I first began Pearl Escapes, they are also just stories… …for the unadventurous adventurer, as well as the keen explorer, we each have our own way of experiencing life."You will come away feeling as if she was sharing with you personally and will want to read more of her life adventures.”“I’ve just booked my first holiday in 13 years!”"To me, you are a hero... You have learned to take something negative in your life and make it a positive... a gift to others. It doesn't get any better than that. Don't doubt that you are capable of helping others... in terms of other of life's difficulties... What an adventure!" Susan Jeffers, Ph.D., author of "Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway"

A Thousand Mile Walk to the Gulf

Muir was a preservationist and naturalist. His activism helped to preserve the Yosemite Valley, Sequoia National Park and other wilderness areas. The Sierra Club, which he founded, is now one of the most important conservation organizations in the United States.

In early March 1867, Muir was injured while working as a sawyer in a factory that made wagon wheels: a tool he was using slipped and struck him in the eye. This accident changed the course of his life. He was confined to a darkened room for six weeks, worried whether he’d ever regain his sight. When he did, "he saw the world-and his purpose-in a new light," writes Marquis. Muir later wrote, "This affliction has driven me to the sweet fields. God has to nearly kill us sometimes, to teach us lessons." From that point on, he determined to "be true to myself" and follow his dream of exploration and study of plants.

A Thousand Mile Walk to the Gulf recounts Muir's walk of about 1,000 miles (1,600 km) from Indiana to Florida. He had no specific route chosen, except to go by the "wildest, leafiest, and least trodden way I could find." This journal is the earliest of Muir's writings and autobiographically bridges the period between The Story of my Boyhood and Youth and My First Summer in the Sierra.
