Grafton explores their methods, the knowledge they produced, the services they provided, and the overlapping political and social milieus to which they aspired—often, the circles of kings and princes. During the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, these erudite men anchored debates about licit and illicit magic, the divine and the diabolical, and the nature of "good" and "bad" magicians. Over time, they turned magic into a complex art, which drew on contemporary engineering as well as classical astrology, probed the limits of what was acceptable in a changing society, and promised new ways to explore the self and exploit the cosmos.

The dialogue centers around the character of Protagoras, a renowned sophist who claims to be able to teach virtue and excellence to others. Socrates, the main character and interlocutor in the dialogue, engages with Protagoras and his followers, challenging their ideas and methods. Throughout the dialogue, Protagoras and his followers argue that virtue can be taught and that all knowledge is relative to the individual. They use a variety of rhetorical techniques and arguments to defend their position, including the famous statement, "man is the measure of all things." Socrates, however, challenges their ideas, arguing that virtue cannot be taught and that there must be some objective standard of knowledge and truth. Read in English, unabridged.

  Unit 2 focuses solely on increasing your listening ability, which will improve your abilities to engage in dialogue with a native Romanian speaker. This chapter requires you to listen very carefully to nuances in the language. 
  By Unit 3 you will already notice progress in your abilities to speak and understand Romanian. The spoken translation is followed by two repetitions in Romanian at a completely natural speed. While you are learning to process naturally spoken Romanian, Units 3 and 4 will help you memorise new vocabulary and full sentences. 
  In Unit 5 you can test yourself on how much you have learned. If you are having difficulties, we suggest you revisit the listening, speaking, or memorisation section of Units 1, 2 3 or 4, according to what you need more help with.
