Sinopse

Where are all the homes?

The affordable housing crisis today can be solved through innovative residential and urban design. Family models have evolved, society has reframed the role of cities, and ongoing urban realities demand opportunities to create housing for all, from first-time homeowners to retirees.

This book navigates the design process of new housing, like additional dwelling units, and explores ideas that can be implemented from the suburbs to cities. Through the history of urban design, zoning regulation, and with an emphasis on the human side of housing, ileana schinder, with her architecture background, highlights the role that the home plays in society today.

From psychologist, researcher, and horror film enthusiast Brian A. Sharpless comes Monsters on the Couch, an exploration into the real-life psychological disorders behind famous horror movies. Accounts of clinical syndromes every bit as dramatic as those on the silver screen are juxtaposed with fascinating forays into the science and folklore behind our favorite movie monsters.Horror fans may be obsessed with vampires, werewolves, zombies, and the human replacements from Invasion of the Body Snatchers, but even many medical professionals may not know about the corresponding conditions of Renfield's syndrome, clinical lycanthropy, Cotard's syndrome, and Capgras syndrome. Some of these disorders are surprisingly common in the general population. For instance, a number of people experience isolated sleep paralysis, a disorder implicated in ghost and alien abduction beliefs. Fascinations with sleep paralysis have led to its own brimming subgenre of horror. As these tales unfold, listeners not only learn state-of-the-art psychological science but also gain a better understanding of history, folklore, and how Hollywood often—but not always—gets it wrong when tackling these complex topics.

Orson Welles was an actor, director, writer and producer who worked in theatre, radio, TV and film. His film Citizen Kane (1941) is ranked as one of the greatest movies ever made.In 1937, Orson Welles and John Houseman founded the Mercury Theatre, an independent repertory theatre company that presented a series of productions (including Julius Caesar) on Broadway through 1941. To help earn money to stage his productions, Welles moonlighted as a radio actor. In 1937, at age 22, he clouded men's minds as radio's first Lamont Cranston, alias The Shadow. In his own radio series, The Mercury Theatre on the Air, Welles dramatized the H.G. Wells science-fiction classic The War of the Worlds and caused widespread panic when listeners thought that Earth was being invaded by Martians. This broadcast earned Orson Welles great notoriety and a film contract with RKO. He followed up Citizen Kane with 12 other feature films, the most acclaimed being The Magnificent Ambersons (1942), Touch of Evil (1958) and Chimes of Midnight (1966). Even though Welles stayed quite busy acting and producing films, he found time to appear in many radio shows during the 1940s and 1950s. We've carefully selected 12 of his finest radio performances for this collection and we hope that you will enjoy them! The Chemical History of a Candle is a series of 6 lectures on chemistry presented to a juvenile audience in 1848. Taught by Michael Faraday - a chemist and physist, and regarded as the best experimentalist in the history of science - it is probably the most famous of the Christmas Lectures of the Royal Society. Taking the everyday burning of a candle as a starting point, Faraday spans the arc from combustion and its products, via the components of water and air (oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen, carbon), back to the type of combustion that happens in the human body when we breathe. The final lecture "On Platinum" describes a then new method to produce large quantities of Platinum. It was delivered before the Royal Institution on February 22, 1861. (Summary by Availle.)
