The book delves into the format's origins, tracing its roots from the rise of FM radio and album-oriented rock (AOR) to its establishment as a distinct entity in the 1980s. Classic rock radio's success lies in its ability to create a curated sonic environment that evokes powerful memories and a sense of shared identity, highlighting the active role of nostalgia in shaping cultural memory. The book examines the programming strategies employed by classic rock stations, from music selection to on-air personalities, analyzing how these elements cultivate listener loyalty. The Hundred Years' War, a conflict that lasted from 1337 to 1453, was shaped by a variety of complex political, social, and dynastic factors. It was not a war that emerged overnight but rather a culmination of long-standing tensions between England and France. At the heart of the conflict were competing territorial claims, royal succession disputes, and issues of sovereignty that had been simmering for centuries.
One of the most significant catalysts for the war was the feudal system that governed both England and France. In the medieval period, rulers held vast territories that often extended beyond their borders, which led to intricate relationships between monarchs and their vassals. The English monarchy, under King Edward III, had long-held claims to the French throne due to the inheritance of the Duchy of Guyenne, which was located in the southwest of France. This land, granted to the English king by the French crown centuries earlier, became a point of contention when King Philip VI of France attempted to assert control over it. The French monarchy's desire to regain full sovereignty over its territory clashed with the English king’s interests, setting the stage for the war.
Additionally, the death of the French king Charles IV in 1328 sparked a succession crisis. The French throne was left without a direct male heir, leading to a dispute over the rightful successor. The French crown passed to Philip VI, but Edward III, the King of England, claimed that his mother, Isabella, was the sister of Charles IV and thus, he had a stronger claim to the throne. This dynastic dispute became the primary reason for the conflict, as Edward III demanded recognition of his claim.

During the Civil War, Union supporters in President Abraham Lincoln's hometown of Springfield, Illinois, asked him to speak at a rally on September 3, 1863. Lincoln could not attend but wrote this letter to be read at the gathering by his long-time friend, James C. Conkling. The letter was accompanied by a brief note which read, "I cannot leave here now. Herewith is a letter instead. You are one of the best public readers. I have but one suggestion. Read it very slowly. And now God bless you, and all good Union-men." Shortly after the rally, John Murray Forbes wrote to Lincoln, referring to the letter and the Emancipation Proclamation issued on January 1, 1863. Forbes declared that the letter "will live in history side by side with your proclamation." He noted, "It meets the fears of the timid and the doubts of the reformer. It proves that the Proclamation and the policy resulting from it are the most conservative, both of liberty and of our form of government."

What is masculinity? Dominating the world around us, with deadly gun violence, male suicide rates and incels on Reddit, masculinity is perceived to be 'toxic', 'fragile' and 'in crisis'.In this audiobook, beautifully narrated by the author, JJ Bola exposes masculinity as a performance that men are socially conditioned into. Using examples of non-Western cultural traditions, music and sport, he shines light on historical narratives around manhood, debunking popular myths along the way. He explores how LGBTQ men, men of colour, and male refugees experience masculinity in diverse ways, revealing its fluidity, how it's strengthened and weakened by different political contexts, such as the patriarchy or the far-right, and perceived differently by those around them.At the heart of love and sex, the political stage, competitive sports, gang culture, and mental health issues, lies masculinity: Mask Off is an urgent call to unravel masculinity and redefine it.
