  We see the Algebra Project organizing community by community. Older kids serve as coaches for younger students and build a self-sustained tradition of leadership. And we see the remarkable success stories of schools like the predominately poor Hart School in Bessemer, Alabama, which outscored the city's middle-class flagship school in just three years.

  I was standing on my bed looking out of my bedroom window. The sky appeared gray and somber. I saw a young man with dark hair looking up, staring at me from the sidewalk. Then quick lightning flashed, striking him, leaving a small pile of charcoal-colored ashes on the sidewalk where he once stood... I awoke. I was surrounded by plastic drapes and hospital monitoring equipment. The air around me smelled like chicken soup and chemicals. They later told me it had been five months that Id been in a coma. I was wrapped in layers of white bandages. Third-degree burns covered almost 80 percent of my body. My journey was just beginning. The doctors painted a grim future for me. They told my mom that I would never walk again. Oftentimes, we can forget to be thankful for the small things. In her book Snatch Back, author Ruby Hayes recounts some of her most trying times and how God eventually took hold of her life and brought her back to the light. Hayes's book is a shining testimony to the fact that it is never to late to be relinquished from the devil. This is the book that Satan himself does not want published.

  Bessie Cope was born in Liverpool in Lancashire in 1869 (some accounts give an alternative birth year of 1880). 
  Her father died when she was a teenager and her mother remarried a journalist who later became the proprietor of the Liverpool Courier. 
  In 1892 Bessie married Gerald Kyffin-Taylor, who later sat in Parliament before resigning his seat at the outbreak of World War I to serve in the Army, where he rose to the rank of Brigadier-General. 
  After their marriage they settled in Heswall, a town in the Wirral in Cheshire. 
  Little else is known of her works or life except for her obituary in the Daily Mail dated 29th August 1922 which records that she was an enthusiastic sportswoman, especially in angling and motoring and had a reputation in literary circles for the writing of various articles and short stories.  The later were primarily in the Weird and Supernatural genres.

  Lafcadio Hearn was born on the 27th June 1850 on the Ionian isle of Levkás in Greece to a British Army officer and a Greek Mother. 
  His father, fearing for his career prospects at being married to a Greek Orthodox wife, sent them to Dublin whilst he continued to advance his career with further postings.  Life there was difficult for mother and son.  His father returned, wounded and traumatised, when Lafcadio was three.  He annulled the marriage and she remarried but had to give up care of Lafcadio to her sister-in law.   
  After brief periods for Catholic education in England and France he emigrated to Ohio in the United States when he was 19, taking on a series of casual jobs before embarking on a career as a journalist, publishing poems and essays in Cincinnati.  It was whilst here that he began a side-line in translating, starting with Gautier and Flaubert.  He married in 1874 to a 20 year old African-American woman in violation of Ohio's anti-miscegenation law.  The marriage soon failed. 
  In 1877 he relocated to New Orleans to write on a variety of themes before picking up a two year assignment from Harper’s to write in the West Indies, where he also wrote his first novel. 
  In 1890 Harper’s sent him to Japan.  Here he left journalism and took the remarkable decision to become a schoolteacher in the north of Japan.   Enraptured by the culture he was driven to explain it in various Western publications to those who had little, if any, knowledge of its culture.  Within the year he had fallen in love with, and married, a high-born Japanese lady, together they would have four children.   
  In 1895 he became a Japanese national and took the name Koizumi Yakumo, Koizumi being his wife’s family name. 
  The following few years, whilst a professor of Literature at the Imperial University of Japan, were his most creative and admired period.   
  Lafcadio Hearn died of heart failure on the 26th of September 1904, in Tokyo, Japan shortly before leaving to deliver a series of lectures at Cornell University in New York State.  He was 54.

  Martin Van Buren was an American attorney and statesman who acted as the United States' 8th president between 1837 to 1841. He was the ninth ruler of New York, the tenth US Secretary of State, and the 8th Vice President of the United States. 
  He was a creator of the Democratic Party. With the support of well-known leaving President Andrew Jackson and the Democratic Party's organizational strength, he won the 1836 governmental election. 
  He was the 3rd and last incumbent vice president to be chosen president till 1988. Because of the bad financial conditions surrounding the Panic of 1837, he lost his reelection quote in the year 1840 to the Whig candidate, William Henry Harrison. Van Buren rose to prominence as a senior statesman and anti-slavery activist later in life, leading the Free Soil Party ticket in the 1848 governmental election.
