Sinopse

When Captain Barry Shere was blinded during the war, he created rules for himself: keep smiling, never trade on his infirmity, and never be a burden to anyone. But his carefully ordered existence is shattered when he and the captivating Corrie Lyndon are kidnapped by revolutionaries plotting to overthrow the British government.

Hidden in a remote country house, Barry must use his unique skills to navigate danger. His blindness becomes an unexpected advantage as he uncovers the conspirators' plans through secret listening posts and his extraordinary memory of the mansion's layout from his post-war recovery there.

As Barry and Corrie grow closer amid mounting danger, he faces his greatest challenge: maintaining his independence while acknowledging his deepening feelings for her. When their captors threaten to broadcast a signal triggering nationwide violence, Barry must confront both the ruthless mastermind Manoukian and his own fears about love and vulnerability.

Despite all odds, Barry's courage and resourcefulness lead to the plot's discovery, but not before a desperate final confrontation that leaves him fighting for his life—and for a future he never dared imagine possible.

In this latest installment of Alexander McCall Smith’s beloved No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series, Mma Ramotswe and Mma Makutsi take on an intriguing new case and uncover surprising truths.

In the rolling hills just outside Gaborone, surrounded by a grove of acacia trees, lies the Great Hippopotamus Hotel. With spacious rooms overlooking the Botswanan countryside and a fine and loyal staff, the hotel has served as a refuge to weary travelers for many years. But a sudden string of misfortunes threatens to ruin the hotel’s reputation. Food poisoning befalls an unlucky diner, laundry mysteriously disappears from the drying line, and a scorpion stings one of the guests. Mishap after mishap occurs, until it becomes apparent that these incidents are more than simple coincidences—something foul is afoot.

Mma Ramotswe and Mma Makutsi are on the case to find out who could be responsible for these unfortunate events. Meanwhile, one of Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni’s most important clients has asked him to source a sports car, putting him in a ticklish position, as the man’s wife seems to be unaware of the purchase, and the client is taking great pains to keep it that way.

With a healthy dose of good humor and kindness, Mma Ramotswe and her associates must help restore the reputation of the hotel and prove that even the most difficult situations can be remedied with honesty and compassion.

Published in 1919, and listed on the Modern Library roster of the 20th century's 100 greatest novels in English, Winesburg, Ohio presents a series of loosely related character studies of the inhabitants of a fictional Midwestern town that together form a novel of unusual unity and vision. The inarticulate and lonely citizens of Winesburg, each with his or her own secret tale to tell, frequently relate those tales to, or through their interactions with, the character of George Willard, a young Winesburg citizen on the cusp of manhood with dreams of becoming a writer. Thus Winesburg tells the story of the townspeople's loneliness and alienation in parallel with the tale of George's own coming of age. The citizens of Winesburg are described obliquely as "grotesques," but as the introductory chapter makes clear, "The grotesques were not all horrible. Some were amusing, some almost beautiful . . ." Fifty-something Henry Bradbury's life is in free fall. His marriage has failed, he's about to lose his City job, and he now finds himself excitingly but dangerously out of his depth as an unlikely agent of the British secret intelligence services. His therapist, Dr Nea Solomon, is the only person he can trust.
Henry's confession of spying on Russians in London doesn't get the reaction he expects. Nea has her own dark secrets to guard and refuses to see her patient again. Now frightened and on his own, a chain of events leads to murder. Having stumbled upon a poison at the heart of the British establishment, Henry fears for his life and decides to lie low at his holiday home in Lisbon. He spends winter in hiding, preparing for the conflict that he knows is looming. A Russian killer catches up with him and a terrifying chase across Europe ensues. He must fade to grey, go off-grid and tramp home to England. Staying just one step ahead, he joins forces with Nea and Felicity Smith, formerly MI6's most senior female officer, previously "buried" by Nea in witness protection in Cornwall. Together, they uncover a plot hatched at Eton College forty years earlier. But who can they trust?
