While cities offer a multitude of opportunities for economic, social, and cultural growth, they also pose unique risks to the health and well-being of their inhabitants. The concentration of people, industries, and infrastructure in urban spaces brings forth a complex array of health issues, from air and water pollution to mental health challenges and inadequate healthcare access. Understanding and addressing these issues is crucial for creating cities that foster not only economic prosperity but also the physical and mental well-being of their populations.
Urban health problems are often exacerbated by rapid and unplanned growth. In many cities, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, the urbanization process is marked by overcrowded living conditions, poor sanitation, and a lack of adequate healthcare facilities. Urban air pollution, largely driven by traffic and industrial emissions, is a significant contributor to respiratory diseases, cardiovascular problems, and premature deaths.
