Sinossi

Haiku Origins explores the captivating evolution of haiku, revealing its journey from classical Japanese poetry to a globally embraced art form. Delving into literary and cultural history, the book illuminates how elements like kigo (seasonal word) and kireji (cutting word) contribute to haiku's layered meanings within its concise structure.

Haiku's deceptively simple 5-7-5 syllable structure belies its profound artistry, offering a unique vessel for capturing fleeting moments and evoking emotions. The book traces haiku's roots in earlier Japanese forms like tanka and hokku, highlighting its development through the works of master poets such as Basho and Issa. Understanding haiku's historical context, including the influence of Zen Buddhism and the Edo period, is key to appreciating its significance.

Each chapter builds upon the last, beginning with historical predecessors and culminating in an examination of haiku's global spread and impact on other art forms. By analyzing original Japanese haiku and critical essays, Haiku Origins connects to broader fields like history, cultural studies, and linguistics. It emphasizes the dynamic interplay between form and content, showing how the constraints of the structure enhance creative possibilities, making it valuable to both academic readers and anyone interested in poetry or Japanese culture.

"Everyone must read this book." – Lucia Osborne-Crowley
"Extraordinary and utterly compelling." – Adam Phillips
"An almost impossible balancing act." – Merve Emre
“Part philosophical treatise, part memoir, part history, Rees’s genre-bending meditation on hypochondria references everyone from Freud to Kafka to Seinfeld in a provocative search to find out why, exactly, we believe we’re sick.” – The New York Times
A free-wheeling philosophical essay, Hypochondria combines incisive contemporary cultural critique, colourful literary history, and the author’s own experience of chronic health anxiety to ask what we might learn from the hypochondriac’s discomforting experience of their body. Hypochondria is expansive in its range of references, from the writings of Franz Kafka to original yet accessible readings of theorists like Lauren Berlant. Whether he is discussing Seinfeld, John Donne, or his own past, Rees reveals himself to be a wry and perceptive critic, exploring the causes – and the costs – of our desire for certainty.
With wit and erudition, Hypochondria demonstrates both the rewards and the perils of reading (too) closely the common but typically overlooked aspects of our everyday lives.

In The Enablers: How the West Supports Kleptocrats and Corruption — Endangering Our Democracy, Frank Vogl delivers a gripping and deeply researched exposé that reveals how Western institutions—banks, law firms, accountants, lobbyists, and even art dealers—play a pivotal role in empowering some of the world’s most corrupt regimes.

With decades of experience in international finance and anti-corruption advocacy, Vogl traces the hidden networks that allow dictators and oligarchs to launder vast fortunes through Western financial systems. He exposes how these enablers turn a blind eye, profiting from secrecy while weakening democratic institutions and global stability.

Clear, urgent, and compelling, The Enablers challenges listeners to confront the uncomfortable truth: corruption isn’t just a foreign problem—it’s being fueled from within our own economies. Essential listening for anyone concerned about ethics, global justice, and the future of democracy.

I decided to write this book because of the need for an effective system of managing and enhancing people's ability to communicate. Its applications span business as well as personal interactions. It can be a simple way of assessing the personalities of people around you and enabling you to better interact with them. I've played the role of an employee in middle management as well as upper management. One essential skill for any good manager is communication. It is important to be able to assess the people you are managing and also to be able to effectively deliver the correct messages. It is not only important to deliver the ideas, but it also needs to be done in a way that impacts the audience correctly. An effective manager must also assess and manage the emotional states of the people involved. I have spent a good part of my life working as an employee and in upper management and middle management. I have also consulted management for many different types of organizations in the public as well as the private sector. I have worked in specific industries such as transit, technology, public works, city government, the military, and hospitality. My approach has always been to try to create effective modes of interaction and communication between employees and middle management, as well as between management and upper management.
This book is concerned mostly with daily interactions at the employee level. The system and skills taught can be applied to any interaction in the business and personal life. Management systems are often well thought out and well structured, but quite often, they do not lend themselves to the chaotic, on-the-spot timber of human interactions. The Tao of Human Communications is a system rooted in present-moment fluid interactions.
