Sinopse

Major Norton gave the order to fire two or three times. Their advanced machine gunners could be seen rushing forward and establishing themselves in commanding posts. Almost at once the ridge we were occupying was swept by machine gun fire.
E.F. Norton lived a life of distinction in the declining years of the British Empire. Born into an accomplished, well-travelled family, he followed his heart and enlisted for a professional career as a soldier. A distinguished military career followed, punctuated with indulgences in his passion for exploration and mountaineering. The British Empire was starting to crumble, and Norton would be called upon more than once to rise to a variety of challenges.
Norton's gift for leadership was first demonstrated via his rapid progression through the ranks in the First World War, which paved the way for future leadership appointments, having earned the confidence and respect of those under his command. Events in the Second World War followed suit, when Norton was abruptly assigned the post of acting governor of Hong Kong, entrusted to save the civilian population from imminent Japanese invasion.
The 1924 Everest expedition also exemplifies the pattern of having had leadership thrust upon him - in this case when General Charles Bruce was struck down by malaria on the approach march. Leading from the front, Norton set an altitude record for climbing on Everest without supplementary oxygen - a record only bettered in 1978 when Reinhold Messner and Peter Habeler made the first ascent of Everest without oxygen. Yet tragedy would follow Norton's achievement, when George Mallory and Andrew Irvine disappeared high on the mountain.
In Norton of Everest, Hugh Norton has written sensitively and knowledgably about his father's remarkable life as mountaineer, soldier, naturalist, artist and family man. As on Everest, the real story is not only the death of the gallant, but also the heroics of the quiet survivors like E.F. Norton.

Excerpt: One day I walked into these mountains, and I never came all the way back. For though Scotland's mountains may not be the highest in the world, they are certainly amongst the most awe-inspiring and enchanting. From the towering pinnacles of Skye, to the high rolling plateau of the Cairngorms; from the bonnie braes of Ben Lomond to the weeping cliffs of Glencoe; from the rocky battlements that encircle Loch Arkaig, to the gentle folds of Ben Lawers as it spills down to Loch Tay: here are offered scenes of unrivalled splendour, landscapes of unparalleled variety, and a magic ground for personal connection, inspiration, and transformation. These are places of accessible adventure - we leave behind the safety of the lush glen to cross the swooping moor, clamber up through craggy corridors, and with silver chuckling burn then spatey cascade as our sometime guide we reach at last the grand summits of these lands. Here beneath a hundred rainbows lie a hundred pots of gold - unclaimed scenic ingots that are yours for the taking and to which I hope to lead you, on a journey for body, for mind, and perhaps for something deeper.

This history of the hunting dog “looks at the breed in relation to outlaws and lawmen, celebrities and common folks—and everyone in between” (Appalachian History.net).   Though originating in Germany, the Plott hound reached worldwide fame through the contributions of many colorful characters from the Southern Appalachians. Originally brought to America by German immigrant Johannes “George” Plott, the hounds quickly became renowned for their stamina and gameness. Quill Rose—a legendary local outlaw, moonshiner, gunfighter and more—helped cultivate the bloodline for bear hunting, while revered baseball icon Branch Rickey brought national acclaim to the breed through his hunts in the Hazel Creek Watershed. Writer Frank Methven wrote extensively about the Plott hound for decades, and the Methven Award remains one of the most coveted big game hunting awards in the world.   Author and breed expert Bob Plott reveals the fascinating people and places that have shaped the history of the Plott hound.  “Written as only a third great-grandson of George Plott—the man who first brought the Plott bear hounds to America—could write it.” —Watauga Democrat

The Memory Man – a sobriquet earned for his uncanny ability to recall virtually any sporting trivia – not only gives us his entertaining and forensic insight into which sporting moments he believes can be justifiably described as in a Different Class, but sports fans will also be thrilled to finally discover who Jimmy Magee really thinks is the best of the best – or the most over-rated for that matter – in soccer, GAA, rugby, boxing, golf, athletics and many other sports.
The maestro of memories has anecdotes about the hundreds of iconic sport heroes he has had the privilege of meeting during his travels. The pages of Different Class are bursting with legendary figures: Muhammad Ali, Pelé, Eddie Merckx, Maradona and Matt Busby.
Fans of Irish sport won't be disappointed either, with Jimmy Magee casting a critical eye over the likes of George Best, Katie Taylor, Jack Charlton, Seán Kelly, Brian O'Driscoll, Rory McIlroy, Stephen Roche, Roy Keane, Sonia O'Sullivan, and virtually anyone who's been anybody in the GAA.
With such a stellar cast, this book is definitely in a Different Class.
