Kıyının hemen yanında türlü türlü otlar, çiçekler gölün etrafını süslüyordu. Ağaçların arasından gölü ziyarete gelen birçok canlı vardı. Su içmeye gelen tavşanlar, tilkiler, gölde yaşayan kurbağalar, çiçeklerden beslenen kelebekler, arılar, balık avlayan kuşlar ve daha neler neler… Saymakla bitmez.

Ancak biz gelelim kuyruklarını sallaya sallaya, sağa sola devrile devrile yürüyen; arada vak vak öten ördek ailesine. Bu aile küçük bir aile değildi. Oldukça kalabalık bir ördek sürüsüydü. Yaklaşık yirmi yavru, onların anne ve babaları, teyzeleri, diğer akrabaları hepsi bir arada geziyorlardı. Otuz beş - kırk ördekten oluşuyordu bu büyük ördek sürüsü.
