Synopsis

Howard Phillips Lovecraft (1890-1937) was an American writer, poet, literary critic and essayist, recognized as one of the greatest writers of horror literature together with Edgar Allan Poe and considered by many to be one of the precursors of Anglo-American science fiction. His works, a contamination between horror, soft science fiction, dark fantasy and low fantasy, have often been described, even by himself, with the term weird fiction (where weird stands for "strange"), being recognized among the main origins of the modern literary genre of the new weird.Lovecraft's horror novella The Dunwich Horror, which we propose to our readers today, was written in 1928 and first published in the April 1929 issue of Weird Tales. It takes place in Dunwich, a fictional town in Massachusetts. It is considered one of the core stories of the Cthulhu Mythos.

She falls in with the neighbor and her witchy friend, exploring nascent supernatural powers as the boundaries of reality shift in and out of focus. But when the creaks and hums of her apartment escalate into something more violent, she realizes that she may have brought her boyfriend’s presence?whether psychological or paranormal?back to haunt her. "One should start in the cold December of 1880, when the ground froze and the cemetery delvers found they could dig no more graves till spring."

In the Vault is a macabre short story written in 1925, (although not published until 1932) showcasing Lovecraft's flair for turning mundane settings into scenes of horror. When an undertaker manages to trap himself in the vault where he stores the bodies, he tries to pile-up the (occupied) coffins in an effort to escape. But a careless misstep leads to a horrifying encounter with vengeance from beyond the grave.

Though virtually unknown and financially unsuccessful during his lifetime, H.P. Lovecraft (1890-1937) is now regarded as one of the most influential 20th-century writers of supernatural horror fiction. Widely credited with inventing the "cosmic horror" genre—fiction that explores humanity's insignificance in the face of vast, unknowable cosmic forces—he also created the "Cthulhu Mythos", a shared universe of ancient alien beings and forbidden knowledge that has influenced generations of horror and science fiction writers.
