Sinopse

Jubelian's plans to escape her dark fate are threatened as her "relationship" with Max does nothing to stop her father's marriage schemes. Unknowingly, she has also caught the attention of the very man who may bring about her end.

In her frantic struggle to avoid disaster, Jubelian remains oblivious that Max is, in fact, the prince she fears. Though Max is desperate to reveal his true identity as Prince Maximillian, his attempts to fix her perception may only lead to more chaos.

    Crime.
Our society's great constant. That which started as a small infection quickly mutated into a vicious disease that preyed upon the weak and gullible.
Crime's rapid development inevitably birthed our justice system to curtail the mass populace into adherence. An adherence disguised as law and order; a moral standing so that all can live in harmony and peace. And thus that control grew more powerful and the people willingly surrendered their freedoms for the illusion of security and protection.
As our nation expanded and developed crime persisted, lingering in the shadow of our monstrous city buildings, thriving among the less fortunate and spreading like a sickness throughout humanity. Crime's corroding nature has even seeped into the law and order that was first designed to keep it at bay. Our justice system has now become but a tool for crime to use to decay civilisation.
As an officer of the law, in the service of this great city of Me'tra, I try to stem the unending force of crime, but I am only one person. What could I possibly hope to achieve?

Saving the world was hard. That was nothing compared to raising three kids . . .

They said I was gifted. The most powerful mage born to our bloodline in more than a century. The dark sorcerer didn't stand a chance. I was a hero. I was famous. I was bad ass. But that was twenty years ago.

Now, I'm married with three kids. I have the best lawn in our suburban neighborhood. I have a little more around the mid-section than I used to, but I've still got it.

There's been a disturbance in the ether. Strange creatures are terrorizing my community.

Has the dark sorcerer escaped his arcane prison? Do I still have what it takes? Can I stop him a second time?

I might not be as strong as I used to be. But this time, I'm not fighting to save the world.

    I'm fighting for my family.

“The universe isn’t just very old, remember, it’s also very young.”
In a world inundated with dystopian narratives, White Mirror is a bold attempt to breathe a new air of hope and adventure into science fiction and civilization as a whole. This collection of thirty-one original stories, each more thought-provoking and mind-bending than the last, follows the many lives of Lucilius—an explorer, inventor, and all-round Renaissance man of the next frontier—whose breathtaking journey through space and time offers us not only a profound glimpse into who we are, but who we could become.
The future of civilization, the frontiers of consciousness, the very fabric of the cosmos… In this carefully constructed anthology, Tinkered Thinking takes us beyond the boundaries of art and science, leaving no stone unturned in our search for new answers to humanity’s oldest questions:
    Where did we come from?
    Where are we going?
    Why are we here?

This book is the first book of the Lensmen series and contains the prequel. After the Lensmen books became very popular, "Doc" Smith took a magazine series he had written14 years before and turned it into this exciting novel as a prequel explaining how the lensman came about. And exciting it is! He added six new chapters that explain the eons-long eugenics project of the super-intelligences of the Arisia. This alien race is breeding two genetic lines to become the ultimate weapon in Arisia's cosmic war with their arch enemy, the Eddore. The initial chapters cover the Kinnison genetic line during the fall of Atlantis and Nero's (Gharlane of Eddore) reign in Rome. These tales were inserted into the novel following the serialized release, along with chapters covering members of the Kinnison line in World Wars One, Two and Three. The final chapter of Triplanetary tells of the discovery of the inertialess drive that allows faster than light travel. Patrolman Conway Costigan and his friends engage in a space battle with Gray Roger the pirate gangster. This conflict is complicated by the arrival of the technologically superior, extra-Solar, amphibian-like Nevians, resulting in the first interstellar war involving humans. In this story Virgil Samms and Roderick Kinnison, two very important members of the eugenics project, are introduced. They will play the leading roles in the next story, First Lensman.
