Sinopsis

In "Hills and the Sea," Hilaire Belloc masterfully weaves a rich tapestry of evocative prose that blends autobiography, travelogue, and poetic reflection on the English countryside and coastal regions. The text is marked by Belloc's characteristic wit and acerbic humor, all while delving into the themes of memory, nostalgia, and the enduring connection between man and nature. Set against the backdrop of the early 20th century, this work reflects the profound changes in society and the landscape, as the author contemplates both the physical and metaphysical realms, lending an air of timelessness to his observations. Hilaire Belloc (1870-1953) was a multifaceted figure—a writer, historian, and political activist—whose experiences as a French-born Englishman shaped his worldview. His deep appreciation for landscape and heritage stems from his formative years spent in the rural areas of England, combined with a critical perspective on the rapid industrialization of society. Belloc's Catholic faith and profound love for tradition permeate his writing, rendering it a distinctive voice in the literary landscape of his era. "Hills and the Sea" is recommended for readers who seek not only to explore the beauty of the English countryside but also to engage with Belloc's insightful commentary on the human condition. This work is a timeless pilgrimage rendered in beautiful prose, offering both aesthetic pleasure and philosophical depth.

Who better to travel to Italy with than Charles Dickens? From the travails of 19th century travel to the wonder of discovering the great art of western civilization, all are brought to life with the characteristic humour, wryness, sentimentality, fervour and love that are poured into the best of the author’s fiction.
Modern readers will recognise many of Italy’s historical treasures that millions have enjoyed since Dickens described them over 150 years ago; in that sense surprisingly, little has changed.
What might be more interesting to us today are the nature and mechanics of tourism in 1846. So used are we to the relative comfort and speed of global transport that we forget the discomforts (and at times horrors) undertaken by those few that would endeavour to see the world in previous centuries. By comparison we journey at our leisure whereas Dickens’ journal is more the record of a pilgrim and pioneer.
Far be it from him however to dwell on the rigours of Victorian tourism, indeed he saves his pithiest wit for such times and is much more interested, as he always is, in the humanity of all he encounters.
His vibrant and colourful description of the Roman Festival is as joyful as his reserved observation of an execution is sombre and reserved. Dickens is not enamoured of all he experiences and is quick to let us know when he suspects sham commercialism, hypocrisy or injustice.

In 2008, at the height of the U.S. housing crisis, and just when novice real estate investor Mary Lehman thought things couldn't get any worse... they didn't! Instead, she parlayed her financial woes and failed investments into a fascinating adventure, fulfilling her lifelong dream to travel.
No stranger to difficult times, Mary grew up working long hours on her family's backbreaking mid-western fruit farm while steering clear of her irascible father, only to end up a pregnant teenage army bride with an abusive husband. Single again and with a young son, Mary returned to college believing it would make a difference. Yet, her journey to better her life continued at a slow pace until she ultimately landed a dream job in the Florida Key's hot real estate industry. There she experienced a level of success beyond anything she had ever imagined, only to watch everything she had worked so hard to build vanish practically overnight. Fighting back against the depression that threatened to consume her, she cashed out what little she had left in savings and set out on a three-month trip to Europe.
Cappuccino Per Favore tells the story of that uplifting, life-affirming journey. Part memoir, part travelogue, part celebration, it is, first and foremost, a love story. Not for another person but for a magical place, northern Italy's incomparable Treasure Mountain with its breathtaking vistas, challenging hiking trails, great food, and generous and hospitable people.
