Beschreibung

JEEZ AND THE GENTILEWhat do you do when life overwhelms? Tom learns to lean on God and trust his own instincts.Tom is a bitter twelve-year old whose father is killed in a police drug raid gone bad. During speeches at his father’s funeral, he fails asleep and wakes up in the first century on the road to Sepphoris where he meets a young Jesus who introduces himself as Jeez. Together they witness four soldiers escaping the city on horseback. When they reach the city, they learn that Jeez’s father, Joseph, has been murdered and a young, Mary Magdalene, has been kidnapped. As witnesses, Tom and Jeez are both drafted by local authorities to pursue the four horsemen and bring them to justice. The pursuit takes them to different villages and towns in Israel (Sepphoris, Nazareth, Megiddo, Jezreel, Sebastian, Shechem, Bethel, Jericho, and Jerusalem). In the process, they brave lions, hyenas, and scorpions, and cope with grief, human trafficking, murder, spiritual warfare, first-century politics, and travel in the ancient world. In spite of his fish-out-of-water status, Tom learns to lean on God and rely on himself. Jeez learns the boundaries of being fully human within the context of relationship. Tom returns to our time a changed person with an appreciation for forgiveness and a growing faith.Premise: Gospel of Luke meets the Wizard of Oz

The boy knows that times are tough for his family. Every night, his father goes out hunting with their great coon dog, Sounder, to try to put food on the table. But even with the little they bring back, there is still never enough for the family to eat.
When the boy awakens one morning to a sweet-smelling ham on the table, it seems like a blessing. But soon, the sheriff and his deputies come to the house and take the boy’s father away in handcuffs. 2025 NCTE Notable Verse Novel
    High Plains Book Award Winner
“Intensely readable.” —School Library Journal (starred review)
When her unconventional parents finally agree to settle down in one place, twelve-year-old Cayenne’s dreams come true—but the reality of fitting in is much harder than she imagined. Acclaimed author Jessica Vitalis crafts an unforgettable historical novel-in-verse about belonging, family, and social class, for fans of Lisa Fipps’s Starfish and Jasmine Warga’s Other Words for Home.
As Cayenne enters seventh grade, her parents decide it's time to stop living in their van, roaming from place to place. Cayenne hopes that this means she will finally belong somewhere and make some friends. But it turns out that staying in one place isn’t easy at all.
When her social studies class studies the Titanic tragedy (the wreckage has just been discovered and her teacher is obsessed), Cayenne sees more and more parallels between the social strata of the infamous ship and her own life. Will she ever squeeze her way into the popular girls’ clique, even though they live in fancy houses on the hill and she lives in a tiny, rundown home with chickens in the front yard? Is it possible that the boy she likes actually likes her back? Can she find a way to make room for herself in this town? Does she really want to? Maybe being “normal” isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.
Set in the mid-1980s, this literary novel is for readers of Megan E. Freeman’s Alone and Erin Entrada Kelly’s We Dream of Space.
