Sinopse

This 3-volume book features a comprehensive collection of most significant scientific, political and speculative essays by Herbert Spencer. The first volume is made up of essays in which the idea of evolution, general or special is dominant. In the second volume essays dealing with philosophical questions, with abstract and concrete science, and with aesthetics, are brought together; but though all of them are tacitly evolutionary, their evolutionism is an incidental rather than a necessary trait. The ethical, political, and social essays composing the third volume, though mostly written from the evolution point of view, have for their more immediate purposes the enunciation of doctrines which are directly practical in their bearings. Volume 1: The Development Hypothesis Progress: Its Law and Cause Transcendental Physiology The Nebular Hypothesis Illogical Geology Bain on the Emotions and the Will The Social Organism The Origin of Animal Worship Morals and Moral Sentiments The Comparative Psychology of Man Mr. Martineau on Evolution The Factors of Organic Evolution Volume 2: The Genesis of Science The Classification of the Sciences Reasons for Dissenting From the Philosophy of M. Marriage, relationships, and interpersonal relationships have changed for black women, and it is apparent that many of them are becoming victims of domestic violence than ever before. Police stations and court dockets are replete with black men and women who have violently disagreed and have to undergo therapy to mend their violent misunderstandings. The main tragedy is that many back women and young girls are dying because of domestic violence. Young black girls who have not tasted the beautiful air of progress and success in life are dying as young black boys release their rage upon them without remorse. Why are there so many women being victims of violence in their communities? Some would say that black women themselves are responsible for the majority of the cases that leave them victims of violence. And if this is true, what has become of the black families that raise these young beautiful black women? In addition, this book expounds on real issues that carefully look at black women as victims of domestic violence and black women who are perpetrators of domestic violence.

"The world was changing, but it was not ending."

Spanning nearly five centuries of transformation, Sir Charles Oman's classic work deconstructs the myth of the "Dark Ages" as a period of mere ignorance. Instead, he reveals a vibrant, violent, and crucial era where the wreckage of the Roman Empire was forged into the foundations of modern Europe. From the deposition of Romulus Augustulus to the death of Charles the Fat, Oman provides a sweeping narrative of the men and movements that shaped the West.

The Clash of Civilizations: Oman masterfully tracks the rise and fall of dynasties. Witness the struggle of the Byzantine Empire to hold the East against the rising tide of Islam, the brutal expansion of the Frankish kings, and the terrifying shadow of the Viking raids. This is a history of grand strategy and battlefield tactics, where the author's expertise in military history shines through every chapter.

The Pillars of the Middle Ages: Beyond the battlefield, The Dark Ages explores the intellectual and religious shifts of the era. Follow the influence of the papacy, the preservation of classical knowledge in monasteries, and the administrative genius of Charlemagne's Renaissance. Oman proves that this was an age of intense creativity and political evolution, setting the stage for the Crusades and the feudal system that would follow.

History written with the precision of a scholar and the soul of a storyteller. Purchase "The Dark Ages" today and rediscover the roots of the Western world.

    Trapped in America’s Safety Net...

    Andrea Louise Campbell

When Andrea Louise Campbell’s sister-in-law, Marcella Wagner, was run off the freeway by a hit-and-run driver, she was seven-and-a-half months pregnant. She survived—and, miraculously, the baby was born healthy. But that’s where the good news ends. Marcella was left paralyzed from the chest down. This accident was much more than just a physical and emotional tragedy. Like so many Americans—50 million, or one-sixth of the country’s population—neither Marcella nor her husband, Dave, who works for a small business, had health insurance. On the day of the accident, she was on her way to class for the nursing program through which she hoped to secure one of the few remaining jobs in the area with the promise of employer-provided insurance. Instead, the accident plunged the young family into the tangled web of means-tested social assistance.

A social policy scholar, Campbell thought she knew a lot about means-tested assistance programs. What she quickly learned was that missing from most government manuals and scholarly analyses was an understanding of how these programs actually affect the lives of the people who depend on them. Using Marcella and Dave’s situation as a case in point, she reveals their many shortcomings in Trapped in America’s Safety Net.

And, while Marcella and Dave’s story is tragic, the financial precariousness they endured even before the accident is all too common in America, where the prevalence of low-income work and unequal access to education have generated vast—and growing—economic inequality. The implementation of Obamacare has cut the number of uninsured and underinsured and reduced some of the disparities in coverage, but it continues to leave too many people open to tremendous risk.

Behind the statistics and beyond the ideological battles are human beings whose lives are stunted by policies that purport to help them. In showing how and why this happens, this book offers a way to change it.

Swamped beneath the tide of fake news, wars on woke and social media storms lies democracy. Jo Phillips and David Seymour guide the reader through the workings of government and Parliament and make a passionate case for the power of democracy. Their argument is that young people should take back control of the future, hold politicians to account and get involved.
In the last decade we've had a Brexit referendum, the Covid pandemic, war in Ukraine and Gaza, increasing fears over the climate emergency, a new monarch and since 2010, six Prime Ministers.
Britain's influence in the world has been diminished, freedom to protest peacefully has been curtailed, the cost of further education is a concern, the health service is in crisis and the likelihood of owning your own home or even finding somewhere to rent is becoming less and less.
If younger people turned out to vote in the same numbers that older people do, this country would be a very different place. Apathy is the enemy, not the answer.
