Sinopsis

«what vegetarianism is, and (a scarcely less essential point) what vegetarianism is not !»

Henry Stephens Salt  was a noted ethical vegetarian, socialist, humanitarian and pacifist. It was Salt who influenced Gandhi's study of vegetarianism. He is credited with being the first writer to argue explicitly in favour of animal rights (1892). He was way ahead of his time in his approach to animal welfare.
Henry Salt is indeed an interesting turn-of-the-century writer whose ideas have been greatly influential and whose books are still worth reading.
With clear logic and entertaining dialogues, the author presents many reasons for a vegetarian rather than a “flesh-eating” diet. Defining vegetarism as Moral Choice, the book incline us to think upon the reforms in diet.

Excerpt: «It is the special purpose of this book to set forth in a clear and rational manner the logic of vegetarianism. To the ethical, the scientific, and the economic aspects of the system much attention has already been given by well-accredited writers, but there has not as yet been any organized effort to present the logical view—that is, the dialectical scope of the arguments, offensive and defensive, on which the case for vegetarianism is founded. I am aware that mere logic is not in itself a matter of first-rate importance, and that a great humane principal, based on true natural instinct, will in the long-run have fulfillment, whatever wordy battles may rage around it for a time; nevertheless, there is no better method of hastening that result than to set the issues before the public in a plain and unmistakable light. I wish, therefore, in this work, to show what vegetarianism is, and (a scarcely less essential point) what vegetarianism is not.»

Now lovers of low-carb cooking can have their gumbo and eat it too, thanks to the chef who “was Cajun before Cajun was hot” (Anne Byrn, bestselling author of the Cake Mix Doctor series).

Millions of Americans have discovered exactly what Chef Jude W. Theriot found when he tried a diet low in net carbohydrates: that cutting carbs is an effective way to maintain long-term weight loss because the food available on this regimen can be deeply satisfying. Chef Theriot lost more than one hundred pounds eating the recipes he developed for this cookbook.

The recipes in this cookbook cover a tremendous range from standard American favorites like pizza, (mock) mashed potatoes, and meatloaf, to classic Cajun dishes including étouffée, shrimp au gratin, and even jambalaya. The seafood recipes cover just about everything that swims, and the sauces and seasoning mixes can elevate just about any dish into a special treat. There are even dessert recipes sure to satisfy the sweet tooth without the sugar.

One unique feature of each of Chef Theriot’s cookbooks is the lagniappe, or “a little something extra.” This book includes suggestions for parties, additional uses for recipes, serving suggestions, and more. This book proves that Cajun cooking can be low-carb cooking. Each recipe lists serving size, total carbohydrates per serving (which includes sugar alcohols), net carbohydrates per serving, and calorie count.

The author of Blackbird Bakery Gluten-Free tackles the fundamentals of gluten free baking in this cookbook featuring six flour blends and 100+ recipes. Each chapter offers easy-to-follow recipes that demonstrate the versatility of these blends—while debunking the notion of an “all-purpose” flour. Morgan transforms more than 100 favorite comfort foods into gluten-free delights, including jelly donuts, chicken and dumplings, red velvet cupcakes, challah, and more. These treats boast the same taste, texture, and appearance as their gluten-based inspiration, and some—like the lemon-raspberry pop tart—are even better than the original. Packed with more than 100 photographs, The Everyday Art of Gluten-Free empowers its readers to make virtually any recipe into a delicious, gluten-free version.
