Sinopse

In "Submarine and Anti-submarine," Henry John Sir Newbolt presents a meticulous examination of naval warfare during the early 20th century, particularly focusing on the strategic interplay between submarine and anti-submarine tactics. Newbolt employs a clear, engaging literary style, blending technical analysis with historical narrative, which situates the book within the context of World War I naval strategy. He skillfully navigates the complexities of emerging submarine technology and its implications for naval power, reflecting the anxieties and innovations characteristic of this turbulent era. Newbolt, a prominent British poet, historian, and public figure, was deeply invested in the naval traditions of his time, having served in various capacities that provided him with firsthand insight into military affairs. His commitment to capturing the essence of nautical strategy and its ramifications was likely fueled by both his literary inclinations and his experiences as a lifelong advocate for the Royal Navy. This unique perspective allows Newbolt to articulate the tension between aggression and defense within maritime operations, a theme that resonates throughout the text. "Submarine and Anti-submarine" is invaluable for historians and military enthusiasts alike, as it offers a profound understanding of naval doctrine and its evolution. Newbolt'Äôs ability to distill complex concepts into accessible prose makes this work both informative and engaging. For those interested in the intricacies of maritime warfare and its historical context, this book is an essential addition to their library.

The striking saga of the Glorious Revolution is one that continues to fascinate historians around the world today. Some chroniclers have referred to these events as the “Bloodless Revolution,” but other historians say otherwise. The ruthless game of politics that William of Orange and England’s King James II played may have been somewhat bloodless in comparison to history's greatest rebellions, but the rebels, soldiers, and other pawns who lost their lives along the way must not be forgotten. The revolution would also pave the path for a series of bloody wars between England and Scotland, the result of which has left quite a legacy of its own.
Furthermore, it’s important to remember that James did try to return to England, and there would be two more years of war before James II gave up the quest to regain the throne. On July 1, 1690, the famous Battle of the Boyne was fought near the town of Drogheda, about five miles west of Baltray. The combatants were the supporters of King James II and King William III, both claiming to be the lawful sovereigns of England, Scotland, and Ireland. The conflict was part of a broader struggle for the destiny of the British Isles, and though it was not the decisive battle of the war, it is the most famous, the commemoration of which still fans tensions between Protestants and Catholics in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. In its aftermath, James II would again leave the British Isles, this time for good.

A sport-loving college freshman, Kerry Hellmuth commits instantly to riding in the first women's Little 500 race at her first dorm floor meeting. Only later does she learn what the Little 500 is--a bicycle race around a cinder track pitting dorm teams against independents and sororities--and how much riding in the historic first edition of the race will enrich her college experience. Led by two RAs, Hellmuth and her dorm team of motivated and scrappy athletes begin training indoors and on long rides through the beautiful rolling hills of South Central Indiana, sometimes so intensely that they lose their lunch or finish in tears. Along the way, they come of age together, navigating the passage from their respective family lives into adulthood. Hellmuth finds herself and she even finds love with a handsome teammate. Willkie Sprint is the inspiring true story of that year of wonder and challenge.
The team's plucky freshman dream of glory despite the sense that no one can beat the upper-class(wo)men from the sorority team whose historic attempt to qualify for the men's event helped bring the women's edition into existence. The closer they become, the better the teammates perform on their bikes. Will the rag-tag Willkie underdogs pull off the Cinderella story? You will love witnessing the unbreakable bonds that emerge between these richly painted team members, be entertained by their lively discussions as they pedal, be awed by their dedication and perserverance, and be inspired by their triumphant approach to racing and life.
"With heart and humor, Kerry Hellmuth shares her cycling team's journey to victory in the inaugural Women's Little 500 ― from their kick-off meeting to their final lap. This coming-of-age memoir is a powerful story about perseverance, unbreakable friendships, falling in love, and learning who you are."―Sheryl Sandberg, former COO of Meta, and Founder of LeanIn.org/OptionB.org

Edward Abbey, who never much liked Alaska, called it "our biggest, buggiest, boggiest state." To others, it has been a cure for despair. When Michael Engelhard moved to Fairbanks more than three decades ago, he was a cheechako, a subarctic tenderfoot. Gathering skills and experiences the hard way, he attained "Sourdough" status while realizing there would always be more to learn, see, and do in the land of midnight sun and auroras.

En route, Engelhard suffered frostbite, stubborn yaks, grizzly charges, trophy hunters, cold-water immersion, heartbreak, incontinent raptors, one pesky squirrel, and honeymooners from abroad. He tried to rescue a raven and explored Arctic dunes and a glacier's blue heart, and his own as he mingled with caribou on their epic journeys.
