Sinopse

Washington Square is a short novel by Henry James. It is a structurally simple tragicomedy that recounts the conflict between a dull but sweet daughter and her brilliant, unemotional father. The plot of the novel is based upon a true story told to James by his close friend, British actress Fanny Kemble. The book is often compared with Jane Austen's work for the clarity and grace of its prose and its intense focus on family relationships.

The bitterest irony in the story is that Dr. Sloper, a brilliant and successful physician, is exactly right about Morris Townsend, and yet he is cruel to his defenseless and loving daughter. If the doctor had been incorrect in his appraisal of the worthless Townsend, he would be only a stock villain. As it is, the doctor's head functions perfectly but his heart has grown cold after the death of his beautiful and gifted wife.

Catherine gradually grows throughout the story, ultimately gaining the ability to judge her situation accurately. As James puts it: "From her point of view the great facts of her career were that Morris Townsend had trifled with her affection, and that her father had broken its spring. Nothing could ever alter these facts; they were always there, like her name, her age, her plain face. Nothing could ever undo the wrong or cure the pain that Morris had inflicted on her, and nothing could ever make her feel towards her father as she felt in her younger years." Catherine will never be brilliant, but she learns to be clear-sighted.

"Have you ever wanted something so bad you was willing to crawl over bodies to get it? I mean, fiend for it so hard it didn't matter who you hurt, how low you had to scrape, it was gonna be yours? That's what music and balling did for me. They were the fundamentals behind my rise … and the perpetrators of my fall. They called me Harlem's black prince. A rising star who carried street dreams on his back. But the streets, ya know. They got a way of coming for theirs. A habit of sneaking up on you when you ain't looking."
Andre "Thug-A-Licious" Williams came up on Harlem's meanest streets. But thanks to his nearly ankle-breaking hoop moves and explosive mic skills, he made it out—and dominates the rap scene with chart-topping urban hits.
Thug has sexed all the hottest freaks and has a slew of baby mamas to show for it. But no matter how many women he takes to his bed, only one can claim his heart: successful beauty salon owner Carmeshia "Lil' Muddah" Vernoy, his ride-or-die queen, who has stuck by his side and had his back through thick and thin.
But Thug also has a nightmarish history with someone else. Pimp Williams, his older cousin and ex–partner in crime, is a cold-blooded killer who spreads havoc all over Harlem and will stop at nothing to get what he wants—even if it means betraying his own family, crushing Carmeshia, and forcing Harlem's black prince down to his knees and back to his bloody beginnings.

Recently, a number of Western stories have been discovered among Max Brand’s unpublished works and the first story in this book, “The White Streak,” is one of them. Its protagonist is twenty-one-year-old Jimmy Babcock, a former football star, but now a worker at the local bank run by William Parker in the town of Dresser, which has changed from cattle country to one made up of oil and alfalfa fields. When Parker fires Jimmy, all Jimmy can think is how he will hurt Muriel Aiken, his fiancée, who wants to marry. When his father signs over the old family homestead that is in serious need of repair, Jimmy feels better. But an unexpected invitation from Parker to meet him at the Club convinces him that Parker wants him back. When he learns what Parker really has in mind, Jimmy finds himself recalling the stories he has heard about the notorious robbers the White Streak and Utah Billie, and he has to make a hard decision.
In “The Masked Rider” the betrothed of Carlos Torreño, Lucia d’Arquista, is making her way to Casa Torreño in Spanish California in which no expense has been spared in making her journey a lavish one by her soon-to-be father-in-law, Francisco Torreño. But it is on the journey that Francisco decides that Lucia is a sparrowhawk and that she must be watched carefully, especially once she takes an interest in Taki, a Navajo who is working off a debt to Francisco.
